Good way to learn?

Hey all,

My main focus is administration/troubleshooting, but I'm thinking of learning a bit of programming to add to my skills (plus a job I'm looking at applying for wants some knowledge of VB.NET in addition to the troubleshooting skill.. odd, I know).

I'm not at all familiar with programming.. I could do some ASP/PHP stuff when I did web design, but barely anything useful, and I've forgotten most of it (all I could really do is get it to take data from a database and display it, and hell I used Dreamweaver to write the code for that).

So can anyone reccomend a good book or resource to start learning VB.NET? Or is that too advanced if I'm only starting? Maybe learning regular Visual Basic and then going to .NET? Again.. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to programming. Basically I want to learn enough to be useful, but to be honest I don't see myself becoming a full programmer.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend you starting simple with VB.Net. It is not extremely difficult to learn. Start out with the MS Press VB.net Step by Step. This will give you good walkthroughs and some decent explanations. If you also do admin work then it will help you as you could then start using vbscript to automate some tasks and make your life easier .

'Course, any book that actually has the student or trial addition of Visual Studios wouldn't be a bad idea if you want to learn any of the C++/C#, Visual Basic, J#, and some database managing

All programming languages I've learned (mostly c/c++) have been self-taught, but try to surround yourself with experienced people either online or offline. Having some support when learning how to program is a big key in my opinion for motivation purposes. My best advice to you is to take some classes at a community college or tech school.
