 WorkGroup/Domain question!
Hello!
Could someone help me?
I have a Windows 2003 domain, I have user accounts for
each one of our workers in our small office. But, a
user with a Windows XP Home Edition laptop cannot join
the domain, but get an IP address from the DHCP server
and get access to the Internet. Question: How can I
authenticate this user? Although I'm uising a domain
he logs as if it was in a workgroup. Can I prompt him
for a password and login to use the Internet?
He can't browse secure resources, but I'd like to keep
him, or any other laptop which can't join a domain to
get Internet access.

Windows XP Home edition can not be joined to any domain. You will need to upgrade it to Professional.
If you want to give them access to the internet by them supplying usernames and passwords, you can install a proxy server such as ISA server to authenticate the users.

I thought about using ISA server, but is there any other solution besides ISA?
Does anybody know about a free proxy server for Windows?

Your users can't browse the network, but you can map network drives using the IP address instead of the server name. Doing an OS upgrade from home to pro is not a good idea, I have seen many systems that cash after the upgrade. You will be better off to do a clean install of pro.

So, you are telling me that I can't force users to log into the domain. They have an "option" to log in the domain, or log into the local computer, but still with Network/Internet Access.

The users would log on localy to their PC but to access the network resources they would be prompted for their doamin username and password.

Thanks maxmax79, I'll try your solution. meanwhile the XP Home Edition will be upgraded to XP Pro, with a clean install.
Like I said before, I was thinking about a proxy solution, but ISA Server seems to be very expensive. Is there any other third part solution?
