I'm new to the IT world studying hard to get my MCSE. Went to this interview which went very well. I'm A+ and Network+ Certified. I need advice from people already in the IT field. Job says it pays any where from 25,000 to 35,000. What do you think they might offer. Currently making 46,000 non IT job. Big cut in pay but looks to be a great oppitunity to get my foot in the door. "Hoping 35K" Also can someone explain what ADP equipment is? Thanks for the help and any replies.




DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performing daily computer operations in support of various Personal and Family Readiness (PFRD) application programs. Responsible for setting up production and test runs, backup and restoring systems. Responsible for daily file transmissions to and from various commands. Monitoring production runs, and taking corrective action when a process aborts abnormally. Maintains daily computer logs and control reports, and provides computer services related to data entry, report distribution, and file transfers. Responsible for insuring proper storage of data media in accordance with safety and security regulations. Provides commands with technical guidance for corrective actions relating to application software, operating systems, and hardware problems.
Responsible for 1st level call resolution, escalation and logging of all inbound help desk requests received by telephone, email and via the trouble ticket system. Monitors production network connectivity and may provide 1st level network administration duties.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

Two years of computer operations experience that demonstrates possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities: knowledge of ADP equipment, Unix and Windows operating systems and both local and wide area networking. Microsoft and/or Cisco certifications a plus. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.

That's a level I helpdesk position. When employers list a salary range, it is for the job, not the beginning salary.

You should expect an offer at 25K if you don't have any experience. Even a person with experience should only expect an offer in the 25-28K range.

Helpdesk tends to be dead end. Look for a job as a technician or desktop support. This is considered level II work.

Or you can look for contract work doing deployments.

ADP is Automatic Data Processing inc. They have a Unix based manangement system solution that runs on thin client green screens or through a emulation program called Reflections which is pc based.

Curiousgeorge thanks for the reply. I received an offer of 33K which I was surprised to see after your post. Now the stress of wondering to take a bring cut in pay and get my foot in the door. After reading many post it seems that opportunties don't come to often. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I guess the real question is why do you dislike your current job so much that you would take such a drastic cut in pay? Is there potential in this new position to have the same salary as you did before?

Let's look at the numbers... Let's say that you get a 5% raise every year at this position. Which is pretty good, IMO. It would take you 7 years to earn more than your current salary. Not to mention the rise in the cost of living that makes your money worth less 7 years from now...

That would be a hard move for me unless I REALLY hated my job or was about to loose it.

Congrats on the offer! To be honest, I've never heard of someone with no experience getting anything other than the lowest pay in the salary range. Not to be mean, but you didn't meet any of the qualification requirements of the job and still got $8,000 over the minimum salary! That's definately a first! Way to go!

The most important thing you need to ask is if the $35K they posted in the ad is the maximum pay for that position. If so, you'll hit your top pay next year. After that... no more raises.
