CCNP Self Study
Can anyone recommend whether the Cisco Press Self Study series, or the
Sybex series is the right way to go? I am not concerned with price so much
as with quality and clarity of information. Is one superior to the other,
or are they about the same?
Thanks,
Elric

Re: CCNP Self Study
I would recommend the cisco press books, they also have a book called CCNA
Flash Cards that's pretty good

Re: CCNP Self Study
For the BSCI specifically... based on the plethora of reviews at Amazon,
Chapters/Indigo etc, the best all round book seems to be here:
http://www.ciscopress.com/title/158705146X
That supplemented with these (Vol 1 particularly):
http://www.ciscopress.com/authors/b...f-96c7-aebb150c
30af
should give you a well rounded and fairly broad scope of content & get you
thinking about the CCIE. Search Google groups for CCNP threads from this
ng... there's some good debate on the Sybex/Todd Lammle books.
I've heard some negative things about Cisco Press author Clare Gough... his
books seem to be error prone based on what I've read - best to get some
authoritative advice on that one.
I think the consensus is most people need some Sybex to gain basic
understanding and some CP to articulate the finer points omitted by the
former. Depends on how you learn, what you know and what you have access to
(gear).
I just ordered the Cisco Press text "CCNP Self-Study: Building Scalable
Cisco Internetworks (BSCI), 2nd Edition". Email me in 2 weeks or so for the
verdict =)

Re: CCNP Self Study
i used the sybex books for my ccnp and found them most helpful. i'm
studying for the ccie now and i'm using the cisco books. the sybex books
are geared more towards the tests. they cisco books get more technical but
have many errors. i would actually recommend buying both, since they both
offer different perspectives....cisco press is 'cisco-centric'.
if you REALLY want to know what you are doing i would strongly recommend
booking actual lab-time at an online rack. i really wish i had done the
'hand-on' route when i was doing the ccnp....but when i finished i was
nothing more than a 'paper ccnp' and really didn't know how to do much.
check out www.ipexpert.com or www.internetworkexpert.com for ccnp material.
ipexpert has something called e-scenarios that are labs geared towards
specific focus topics....and you can book lab time w/ them or another lab
vendor.
good luck!

Re: CCNP Self Study
Stay away from sybex. Lammle has a good subnetting chapter in the CCNA
book, but the rest was horrible in my opinion. Syngress and Cisco
Press seem to be the best. Cisco Press has some new series which I'm
not sure about just yet.

I have both the Sybex CCNP Study Guide Kit and the Cisco Press CCNP Certification Library kit, and after reading half of the Sybex BSCI book, I stopped and switched over to the Cisco Press BSCI book. I definately think the Cisco Press book is more informative and it flows well between topics better than the Sybex book. Just my opinion. I'll still skim over the rest of the Sybex book and use the review questions and labs.
