Hi All,
I am looking to start on the road to certification, and I have some
questions...
I have been working with VC6.0 for a few years now, and consider myself
pretty proficient. Trouble is, it looks like I left it too late to MCSD in
it, so I will have to go the .net route (70-316, 70-320, ?). Thing is, I
have no experience of .net development, not even using studio .net yet. The
big question is, am I going to get anywhere with the 60 day eval DVD? Does
anyone think 60 days is long enough to learn the IDE and pass 3 exams?
(we're talking evening only here). Also, is the 60 day eval fully enabled?

3 days is enough time to learn the VS.NET IDE. How long it takes you to
adapt to learn VB.NET, ADO.NET, web services, etc. is another issue. These
tools are not simply the next version above 6.0.

I'm gonna say it takes most people 40-80 hours to get through a Kalani book
for one test, depending on how much practice you're doing along the way and
your skill level. But before you get a Kalani book, I'd recommend reading
several chapters in Prosise to get warmed up to the new .NET world.

The exams are not really language specific, and in any case
concentrate on the dot net framework and related tools; so getting a
good understanding of the framework is where you may need to start,
for the exams that is.

In the real world though, in order to move away from the shabby vb
1,2,3,4,5,6 development practices you may well have encountered, you
will need to gain a good understanding of object oriented development
practices. In doing so, you will be able to take full advantage of
what the dot net framework has to offer.

I have plenty exposure to OOP/D, so I'm not too worried about that side
of things. Is there a particualr book from Prosise ? I remember learning
MFC from one of his books, and I was well impressed. I will look for
that at the weekend if someone can give me a title.

There is a C# book (programming microsoft .net) by good old Jeff. It's
good (as you would expect).
