Question IP filters

Hi all,
I need some help to understand ip filters.

What does it mean by responding to an existing session when setting an input or output filter?

any links to info or any help at all is much appreciated

ok well I now know the answer.

It was setting an Input filter when you have two subnets. a DNS server is on subnet#1 and clients on Subnet#2 what I failed to understand is what the existing session had to do with it.

I found out that the clients start a session then the DNS server respondes to that if the traffic from subnet#1 tried to send data to subnet#2 it would be blocked but because its responding to a session started but the clients on subnet#2 it is allowed to pass therefore the the DNS server can still resolve the query.

Now I know what I needed to know but I cant refer anyone to a site with the info as I couldn't find one.
