Got an IT job.

My last (and my first) IT job didn't last a full week because there was a crazy amount of driving around and just sucked in general. But recently I got a really nice job to do tech support for a small ISP. What is really nice is I can learn what I want. They do website design too and I told them that is something I wouldn't mind learning and doing some for them. There's also plenty of routers, Unix servers, mail servers, etc that I can eventually fool with and put my eventual CCNA to use. My first day was a bit overwhelming. Tons of stuff to remember and lots thrown at me the first day. I also have to do paperwork (canceling, updating accounts, etc). But I guess it takes a few weeks to adjust, right? I'm officially under training, but man is it overwhelming right now. I'm trying to organize notes on how they do various things.

I'm very fortunate to land this. The other two people they hired has an MCSE and the other has tons of experience (while I just have intro certs and very little experience). Jobs *are* out there. I thought I would never find something as nice as this.

Congratulations, it sounds like you found a nice setup for yourself there. You will learn a lot and have fun doing it, that is the best part.

A new environment can be quite overwelming. Just take a few deep breaths and you will be fine. After you acclimate you will do great and things will start to become more familiar.

I got a job over a year ago at a company that migrated 18000+ desktops! Call volume alone in the service center for one month was just shy of 70,000 calls! I definitely know what overwelming is. It was much like a swarm of bees attacking you from all sides.

You just have to remain steadfast and keep the fundamentals running through your mind not letting anything get over on you.

This basic model below has always helped me and can be applied in other areas as well:

1. Gather necessarry data. Whether troubleshooting or moving into a new territory, gather the pertinent data.

2. Keenly identify. Narrow down the area of work or problem so it does not overwelm you and you can target it more agressively.

3. Carefully isolate the issue. This step is the key step in troubleshooting and a must for most any type of sanity.

4. Effectively and efficiently as possible resolve or head toward your objectives.

I hope this helps in your job! Your post reads like you are in a great learning situation. Take advantage of the learning potential offered!

Peace

Thumbs up

Congrats! . I just got a new job myself and they are in the middle of a migration from Novell to AD. Plus I work the 3 to 12 shift so after 8 pm, it is just me by myself. The first couple of nights, it was intimidating, but a just relaxed and said to myself "I can do this!"
