Though they forgot we were vendor neutral (we spoke with them after the article was written), we definitely made a good showing on our first rating ever. 3 categories. ;0)

Most of our contract instructors are making in excess of $100k/yr (some making more than $150k/hr) just TEACHING this stuff. I have several friends that got site surveying jobs after getting their CWNA (because it was required by the employer), starting at around $50k/yr. I know at least 5 CWSPs personally that are making well over $100k/yr working for manufacturers as SEs. Many manufacturers are now mandating CWNA and CWSP of their VARs...in other words, the VAR has to employ a certain number of CWNAs and CWSPs to attain a certain reseller status in order to get a certain level of discount from the distributors.

I don't know of ANY (yes, I said ANY) unemployed CWNPs (includes CWNA and CWSP) anywhere personally. If there are, they haven't emailed me about it. Every time I turn around I'm getting calls from manufacturers and VARs asking who I know that's certified and needs a job. I've run completely out of people to refer. Someone should start a CWNP job board somewhere...

While Planet3 is a for-profit corporation, don't think anyone's getting rich around here. We do this because we love it, and the industry needs it. There's CWNPs certified in over 50 countries now, and manufacturers who once told us to go away are now coming back en-mass, having seen the value in our program. The real money lies with the Wi-Fi Alliance. Their members are the powerhouse vendors with piles-o-cash. Testing fees are obscenely high, and you can tell they have money to burn by the immense marketing strategy they have (which is quite successful I might add). :-) Wish we could market like that!!
I think that the CWNP program serves the same purpose for individuals as the Wi-Fi Alliance serves for equipment. Standardized testing for a technology.

It's hard to argue vendor against vendor-neutral because both have value. I know that because I'm Cisco, Microsoft, and Novell certified myself. CompTIA has been remarkably successful testing strictly on the technology itself. They have decided to delay their Wireless+ cert due to overwhelming market changes. We feel their pain, believe me. The CWNP program is the industry standard for wireless LAN technology, and we make every effort to keep the certification and education process relevant and current. In today's WLAN market, that's a full time job for a large team of people.

Hopefully this has been helpful. :-)

I am not so sure whether the certification makes the difference, but I do know that the knowledge associated with studying for the CWNA certification has value. I also know that I'm getting requests to teach a wireless class, but because of the red tape associated with getting curriculum committee approval, we won't be offering it until this summer. Between now and then I need to both take a CWSP course and pass the exam so I can qualify as a certified trainer to teach both the CWNA and CWSP classes.
