The "serial on usb" to use the cisco console cable. HELP

My laptop does not have the serial port so I am using the "USB" to serial
adapter. It appears to be "COM4" in the device manager. When I connect to
Cisco switch, I got all the garbage characters. What is wrong? Any other
ways to use the console without using the "serial port".

Thanks.

BJ

Have you ever been able to connect to your router via the console port? If
not, you may want to play with some settings (such as speed, flow control,
and stop bits). I would first make sure your flow control is off in
hyperterm. Then start with 9600 baud and move up. If you can telnet to your
router, make sure "line con 0" has correct settings. Issue the "show line 0"
command and look at which settings are configured. If you are using a router
with combined con/aux port, make sure there's no "modem enable" command
under line con 0.

Re: The "serial on usb" to use the cisco console cable. HELP

I use a USB to Serial cable regularly on a Toshiba notebook with
Hyperterminal to access a variety of Cisco products - works like a
champ. If you have the right drivers for the cable, check that the
serial settings in your terminal emulation software are consistent
with the Cisco product that you are accessing.
