Can one create a domain with a .com if they are doing it for a private network. I setup a domain a while back and I remember setting it something like xyz and it automatically appended xyz.local to it. This is in the scenario where you do not have a domain name on the Internet and just want to set it up for a private network. Is it possible to setup xyz.com in a private network?.

Yes, you can use .com in your domain.

Even better, you can use a free dynamic dns service to put your domain on the Internet without having to pay registration. This works even with ISP connections that are dynamically addressed such as dialup or DSL. Check out dynu.com. I use this so I can remote into my home lab from wherever via VPN.

If you are not connected to the internet you can pretty much do whatever you want within the specs for dns naming conventions.

A couple of weeks ago I tried to set up a test domain with .local but dcpromo failed. I then used .com and it worked.
So yes you can use .com

Very Interesting. THanks for your input guys. Second question is: How does one setup a member server. I haven't actually worked with multiple servers, but I would assume, you would just add a second server to the domain,without running dcpromo(ie. making a domain controller). I am just thinking of scenarios If I would need to implement file sharing on a separate computer as well as have a secondary dns server(which i haven't tried either).Just curious to how those work. thnx.

Correct, just join the domain in the properties of 'my computer' on the member server.

Yeah it's good for lab practice and damn convenient, because at work they don't let us use hotmail, etc. so I just VPN to home and have access to the full web unhindered and unmonitored. Of course at work, I'm only viewing technical and cert stuff anyway, but the less people know the better...
