I pass my first certification exam
Hi,
I just passed my first certification - Server+ - last Friday with a score of 80% and I can give some of my experience.
1 - Read more than one book. After reading Sybex Server+ twice, I feel confident to the Server+. But after reading some posts in this forum, I read another book (New Rider Server+) and I find numerous materials not ever covered by Sybex book that was in real Server+ exam.
2 - Be careful about some free practice exams, I suspect that some have been designed to create confusion (to help sell exam). I failed on one test exam where 40% of questions are about SMTP. Expect not more than one or 2 questions about SMTP in real Server+ exam.
3 - READ the question again and again and this advice is more important for people like me where English is not the primary language. If you read too fast, it's easy to select the best answer when question is about the worst answer.
4 - Practice exam include with books are too easy and not even close to real question. I recommend buying practice exam (Transcender, CertEasy, etc.). Even if the questions are not the same (but some are very close) of real questions, realistic practice exam give you the mental background for the real exam. Without this help, I was failing my Server+ exam even if I read 2 books.
5 - Don't make abstraction of your experience. After 6 years of background with servers, I found myself too often answer wrong for material that I know in real life. Yes, some CompTia questions are totally ‘out of real life’, but only some not all. So, don’t try too hard to answer like a ‘weird-alien-CompTia- lifeform’ and be natural in your answer. Just mixing your hand-on experience with good-practice learns in Server+ books.
6 – Begin with A+ and Network+ before Server+. I’m now working on Network+ and I can now answer correctly to 3 questions that I answer wrong in Server+ exam. Arggg…
7 – Relax, it’s not about your life, it’s just certification exam

I passed N+ on october 13th. It was a very easy exam. Maybe too easy to be fun. Just after my next exam (november 4th - Windows XP / 70-270), I will begin Security+. After reading some post about this exam, it appear to be even more challenging then Server+.
