can't install program
hi to everyone.
I am having a problem downloading a program that I need. I had aked earlier about the Virtual Machine. Well I was able to get a copy of it. The program I need Finale Music Viewer, I had it installed, but then when I thought I wasn't going to be able to use it, I uninstalled it. Now when I try to install it again, while it's copy files, I notice it gets as far as "updating registry" then a error message appears that says "winfinview" the name of the program, has perform an illegal operation" and the program closes. I went to the regedit, just to see if I could find the key. I see a lot of programs that I know I have uninstalled but the keys are still there. Is it ok to delete these keys? Also do anyone know why I was able to install it the first time, but now I can't. This program is from Finale I think use to be musicmaker.
any help and information will be appreciated.
thanks
Lilian

Not sure why you can't get through the install, but as far as the Registry goes, your best bet is to get registry cleaning software. Follow the link below, there are several of them, but most are "free to try". Cleaning the registry may fix your other problems.
One other thing to check would be your registry size, it may be too small. Go into system properties and the Advanced tab. Look for the "Change" button. This will open up a new window and there you will see the Registry Size at the bottom. If the Current Size is larger than the Maximum Size, just increase the Maximum Size. You can always reduce it later, after running the registry cleaning software.
Hope this helps some.

Oops! Sorry about that. Got people in here putting in new A/C ducts and got sidetracked. Here you go:

Kind of makes me wonder where I pasted this link the last time.
Hope this helps.

Go to your My Computer icon and right click then select Properties. A new window will pop up, and there you will select the Advanced tab. On the new window you will see a Performance Options button, select that. Another window will open and there you will see a Change button under the Virtual Memory. When the window pops up, you will see the paging file size, and at the bottom the Registry Size. That is where you can change the size of the registry file.
Keep me posted.

Try looking in Control Panel for a "System" icon. You should be able to get to it from there. Been a while since I used Win98.

Enforcer's right. There isn't an option to change the size of the registry in Win9x. You shouldn't need to. As long as your c: drive has enough space. I would follow mrfixit's suggestion to use a registry cleaning utility. There are many available. You can even use the one built in to Windows 98. Just go to start-run and type in scanregw. Although the best way to do it is to shutdown or boot to DOS & use the command-line scanreg tool. From the command prompt type scanreg /fix. (You may need to go to the command directory to use this tool... i.e. c:\windows\command\...)This will repair the registry. Then I would follow up with the /opt command to remove unused space in the registry. You can also restore it to an earlier version. Here are the various switches you can use:
/backup - Backs up the registry and related files without displaying any prompts.
/restore - Displays a list of available backup files, sorted by the date and time the backup was created.
"/comment=<text>" - Enables you to add a descriptive comment to the registry backup.
/fix - Repairs any damaged portions of the registry, and optimizes it by rebuilding it without unused space.
/autoscan - Automatically scans the registry and backs it up without displaying any prompts if there is no backup for that date.
/scanonly - Scans the registry and displays a message if any errors are found. This switch does not back up the registry.
filename - Scans the registry file specified and displays a message indicating whether or not any errors were found. This switch does not back up the registry.
/opt - The /opt command-line switch causes the Registry Checker tool to optimize the registry by removing unused space.
Hope that helps you out.
