I've heard and heard and heard that 70-216 is the beast and that it's the
hardest exam of them all. Well this is in fact CORRECT! This beast is
requiring me to read chapters over and over and over and over! RIP, OSPF
and all the area border stuff is like sticking nails in my brain! My study
material is Syngress's book and I'm wondering if anybody else used this
material to prepare for this exam and what other study books helped you
through the IP routing stuff so you could get a better understanding of it
all. I have been studying this exam for about 2 months now and I'm still
not even close to exam ready! Also if there is anyone that could
recommend what I need to know inside out for this exam please tell! Thanks

I am interested to hear that 70-216 is meant to be the hardest exam. I'm
just starting down the MCSE track, and happened to buy a cheap book on
70-216 from ebay, so am starting with that. I plan for 70-216 to be my first
exam. I have done a networking course at uni and that went into depth about
OSPF (well, the notes talk about distance vector routing - but it's the same
thing). I have read the chapters in my book (sybex) on this and found it to
all be quite easy, but think if I didn't do the uni course I wouldn't
understand it very well.

I am happy to send you the relevant pages from my lecture notes if you like.
I don't know if it will be as useful to you as it is to me, but it still
might help. Drop me an email if interested.

I encourage you to stick with it. If your book is too short of details get
on the 'net. I don't think the algorithm is terribly hard to understand, you
just need to run through a few examples to get a feel for how it works.

I would recomend doing 210/270 and 215 first. They are easier and will give
you a good idea of the style of microsoft exams and cover some material
required for 216, plus the confidence of having a couple passes under your
belt can't hurt.

As for it being the most difficult exam , it is harder than most of the
others , but the corresponding design exam is even worse.

It's taken me over a year, still not ready, Theres alot of questions on
routing and routing table that are barely covered in any of the books.
Everytime I resit I seem to choose the same answers despite reading the
books many times. And my answers are still wrong. It's those choose 2,3 or
all that apply questions. 1 mistake and youve snuffed it.
The exibit questions are too time consuming. I think ive got the RRAS sorted
out but need to swot up on CA's. There was a question(oops can't reveal it
here,disclaimer and all that), I am quite positive about 2 of the options
but the 3rd has me buggered.

The IP/Subnett questions seem straight forward enough, Very little on
Wins,DNS,DHCP, That had me really annoyed as I know them backwards. PCHD,
SND, SNIW almost.

One trick is It says u have 2:15 plus about 15 mins for the questionaire,
When I last sat the exam I said I had no experience with windows 2000 in the
hope of getting easier questions. No such luck,

In protest just tick A, for everything and u get the extra time addded on
for the exam.

Unless theres some secret code we don't know about.

One last thing The goverment are kicking us in the teeth while we are down,
Not only have their work visa policies been corrupt, They are now charging
VAT on the exams bringing it too an expensive £103/ 160 dollars making
everyone fail 3,4 times is great money spinner for microsoft even though
qualified Ive swapped all my software to Linux based and open source in
protest. The lack of support we get for trying so hard.

216 is indeed hard, but 220 & 221 is also not so easy...

I have passed 216 on the first time, but it have cost me more hrs to study
then the others.

I am quite happy with CAs. A while ago I read Windows 2000 Server
Administrator's Companion. It's a great book and covers many things,
including CAs, quite well. It seems to me there will be quite a bit of
overlap between many of the exams, so I thought I would read this book first
and get a good overview of Windows 2000 - what it can do, where things are
etc. Now that I have done that, hopefully I will find reading books geared
towards the exams a bit easier. I guess I won't really know until I start
studying for 70-210. As Dr Zoidberg suggested, I might go for that as my
first exam. I think I too will struggle with the questions where you have to
choose all that apply, so it would be good to get one of the easier exams
out of the way first so I know what to expect for the others.

Bummer. Then again I guess everyone knows them backwards because they are so
fundamental. Then again, since they are so fundamental you'd think they
would be focussed on. Then again, what do I know!

I'm not surprised! "Hi, I'm here for my exam for my Windows 2000 MCSE. BTW,
can I have easier questions because I have no experience with Windows
2000?". No offence, but I don't think I would have helped you either. (In
reality I doubt there's anything they can do anyway, aren't the tests
randomly generated from a bank of questions?).

I'm down in Australia. I haven't actually looked at the pricing of the exams
here yet. I looked at doing the A+ a while ago though. I bought a review
book and studied. I flew through it, the content was so basic. I decided not
to do that exam. I think it was about $1000AU ($600 odd USD), and it just
seemed like a complete waste of money for a test that most people finish in
15 minutes. I will definately go for the MCSE though. I like to look on the
positive side of things, so I will use the cost of the exams as an excuse to
study harder. Much better off studying for longer, and buying another book
if needed than risking failing the exam.

Ensure you know DNS inside out, ensure that you are ok with subnetting,
there is a routing table chart to remember that tells how many clients per
subnet, I will
see if I can dig it out for you, it is a difficult exam to pass.

Good luck to you! I took 70-216 today and did manage to pass it. I really
didn't find the exam to be terribly difficult. However unlike 70-210 &
70-215, this exam seemed to be geared more towards practical application
than book knowledge. Had I not had real-life experience working with Unix
DNS servers, Netware servers, Cert services, etc, etc, I doubt I would have
passed the exam my first go at it.

The worst part of this exam, IMO, were the questions. They were just TOO
long & wordy. By around question #40, I was starting to daydream & think of
all the other things I'd rather be doing with my time :-). Good tactic on
the part of MS to break your concentration!

Just take your time with it really. It helps to try to get some experience
with RRAS beforehand, at least to the point where you know the menus fairly
well. Looking back, it's more the amount you need to know rather than the
actual difficulty of the exam...
