DNS and Routing

Hello guys I am starting to learn about networking but I'm finding some things difficult to understand I was wondering if someone could answer the following (easy for you guys) questions please.

1. If I wanted to setup a company with a website ( for e.g www.abc.com) how would users connect to it regarding DNS. I.e. would users be diverted to a root server then a DNS server at my ISP for the abc level then the ISP would forward it to my DNS server for the www part or would the ISP hold the DNS info for the www part?

2. If I have a datacentre with x about of websites in one location using a certain block of IP Addresses and I wanted to move the centre to another location what would be the issues? could I simply get another Internet connection from the same ISP in the new location and plug in the servers and be up and away?

Many thanks in advance for your time and patience

To answer your first question: If you have a business acount, usually you can have your ISP do the DNS registration for you. To use your example, you would call your ISP and tell them you need to add a www record for abc.com and give them the IP address you are planning to use. They will add it to their DNS server, and it will take 1-2 days to full propogate throughout the Internet (not really, but that's what they usually say).

On your second question, it depends. Is the new location within the same building? Are you moving your Internet connection (i.e. T1 line) with you? We moved our datacenter down two floors earlier this year, and we just had to move the line that extended our T1 from the phone room, and then we were back up and running with no problems. As long as you keep the same ISP (who actually "owns" those IP addresses) you should be able to keep the same IP addresses, in which case the answer is yes, you do just plug in and go.

When you call your ISP be very clear on what you want them to do! I had a four hour run around yesterday for 1 little address in the reverse lookup zone.
