Security+ class .. What Book would you use?

Hi all,
Hear the scoop, I am a Part-Time Instructor for a Community college that has been picked to write the paperwork for several new Certification classes.

iNet+
Security+
Server+

The classes are set to start in the fall, what book would you pick as a textbook for a Security+
class. Any input on the Server+ and Inet+ would be a help also.

Always a good debate on that. Personally I think the Sybex book is good, and if combined with Tcat & Helens pdf and perhaps CBT nuggets then you should have things covered. The Microsoft book is lacking in many areas (about 40%), but does cover a lot of stuff that Comptia thinks is important so could be a good extra resource.

Class pricing

BTW,
The cost for the classes has been set at $800
for 60 Hr of class time. most places around the DC
area are charging $1250 for 35 to 40 hr that is with the exam voucher. $1250 - $250 = $1000 for 35 to 40 hr

for a community college?

I thought community colleges only charge like 10-20 bucks a unit? so around 50 bucks for a class?

or is this one of the open university courses where student picks up its own tuition?

maybe the DC area is just weird...

I would kill for $10-20 per credit hour as it is $51 here for JCs and I don't want to think what tuition is at at the major universities. Regardless, he's comparing the cost from a JC perspective to the cost for you going to a "training center."

For the price of the class, CBT nuggets would probably be out as it is $200 a pop. This would probably be a good option for a "recommended study guide" for students.

As for a book, that seems to be a tough call, as there are none currently on the shelf that really stand out. In the $50 range you have a few competitors.

+ Sybex has gotten decent ratings, but appears to be incomplete in a number of areas.
+ The Microsoft book is notorious for its shortfalls, but CompTIA loves everything Microsoft and somehow people have recommended it.
+ Tcat and Helen's book was waiting on a revision at last check, but serves as a good point by point guide to the exam. There are spots where it is a little thin, however unlike a number of other guides there are numerous footnotes to places with more information.

Cheers,
TB

At the Community college in county rates are about
$75 per Credit Hr. There there is in state retes and out of state rates. Plus other fee's per Credit Hr.

The University near me is like $200 Per Credit Hr.
that in state rates.

Please note I taking the rates as I rember them
I not looking at there WEB page. Also this year lost of College's and University's are going up on rates (State funding cuts).

Also the area I work is the Institute for Technical Education, Non-Credit area.

Lost of classes under $300 but we do have MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, MOUS and are adding CompTia's.
The CompTia is my doing. We had only A+ for the
last 8 year's . Basicly more classes more work for me. I started the training field after getting layoff my job 2 years ago, had the job for 10 years.
