Exchange admin showing bogus numbers

Help!
When I use exchange admin to check the size of a specific user's mailbox, it shows as being zero in size, but has 127,000+ items in it. After opening this users mailbox and checking it's properties, the size of the mailbox is 4.5GBs. Does anyone know why Exchange admin would give me bogus numbers? Is there a size limit of what an individual mailbox should be and/or what exchange admin can handle?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks

setup: Exchange 5.5 running on Windows 4.0 server with SP6

Thats a pretty large mailbox, what is your total store up to? Sounds like time for an email retension policy.

We have problems with users squirreling away email to PST's but at least they are not taking out 4.5 Gigs on the Exchange Server. By the way PST's are only good up to 2 Gigs and are prone to corruption.

Our IS is up to 116GB's. We admins have tried to tell management for years the problems we are going to have if we don't set limits on the mailboxes, they don't want to hear it.

Anyone else know what might be going on?

Are you getting any events in the logs? Are your backups running?

No events, backups are running. When I open the users mailbox from my machine (via outlook) checking the properties shows that it is 4.5 GBs in size. I just can't figure out why exchange admin shows it at nothing.

I believe I will be making a call to MS tomorrow and burn up one of our premium incidense supports if I cannot get it figured out.

here is a reply I received from an MS MVP:

The admin program, being a good 32-bit application, uses 32-bits to
represent integer values. 4GB exceeds the range of positive values
that may be represented in 32-bits (and even exceeds the range of
unsigned values).

I am on the phone right now with MS. I'll keep you posted.

I was going to guess that Microsoft never imagined or intended one user to have that much in their mailbox. Seeing as backup is running and nothing in the event logs, it sounded like a programatic limitation. Is that your biggest mailbox?

I still get the creeps over this issue as you know how code can get when you push the envelope! At least if the system crashes, you can just point to the offending user and say 'He did it!!!' Unless it's the boss of course.

Best of luck.

The problem was as I stated earlier... we moved some of the users mail to a local PST file, and now Exchange Admin shows 3 GB's of mail. WHEW! This is a good tip for all those out there who have an uncontrolled exchange 5.5 environment like I do. (not by my choice, however )
