I am building my first computer......I am very excited and over the last 6
months i have been lookin into the various parts.....Would you guys look at
this computer and tell me if i made good decisions.....This is going to be a
Gaming/Webdesign/Programming machine........I wish i knew when Intel was
going to release there next Pentium 4......so that the price of the P4 3.06
goes down........Also ....the Intel Website says the 3.06 HT chip is not
supported by Win9X or Win2K.......so what does that mean....it wont work
.....or it will work but not to its full potential???? Also tell me if my
monitor choice is good......i want something to show off the Radeon 9700

i haven't used any of the components you listed, but would suggest that you do not use a generic modem.

i got a modem as part payment for work i did for a guy. it was an ambient/intel modem. it's basically a soft-modem - it was slower than the on-board modem i had previously - and when i upgraded the cpu in the machine from a duron 950 to an athlon 1700+, the performance of the modem increased.

if all the parts you are using in the system are modern, they will work well together

when a cpu does not support an o/s, i guess it means that it was designed with Windows XP (and any o/s that m$ or major linux distros may have in development) in mind.

Great! The 'best parts' are often a matter of personal opinion, but your
list seems reasonable. I will say I have always had pretty good luck with
Asus boards. The only thing on your list I would change is the Linksys NIC
and possibly the generic modem. I just have never had good luck with linksys
products. Go with a 3com NIC. If price is really a consideration look for an
Aopen 325 NIC (abt 10.00).
As for the modem, save yourself aggravation and buy an external modem, just
one note though, these days not all external modems are hardware modems,
skip the ones that use usb cables. For a cheap one, look for Actiontec
external.
I'm sure you've done some research in choosing your parts, but do continue,
check out the Asus newsgroup and see what may have been posted about your
board.

Get rid of that ram and go for Crucical ram.

The Asus P4G8X Deluxe comes with Gigabit Ethernet Controller and 6 channel
Audio. If you don't intend to utilize it, save some money and get the
downgraded version. Or lose the Nic and Sound card.
Do you really need a floppy drive?
I have to agree with Forsaken, go with Crucial for the Ram.
You didn't mention Power Supply. Does the case come with one. Don't hold back
any with it.
All in all a very nice(expensive) machine. Mostly depends upon you usage.

Hey Rob,

Glad to hear that you are taking the plunge and building your dream machine!
Remember, check twice before thinking you got something right ;+)

As for the HT chip, not sure what to tell you. I'm guessing that they mean
what you think it is. It does not work to it's full potential, or it has
not been 'verified' for those operating systems. Don't let 'verify' fool
you, it's just that they have not fully tested (about 1 gazillion tests) on
those 2 operating systems. The new chip is to be 'hyper threaded', or use
full 64 bit. The HT does split the cpu into 2 '32 bit' chips, so it's about
the equivalent of having a dual cpu setup (xeon or such), but has yet to be
verified by users. Also, 9x and 2k do not use 64 bit processes. The only
thing out that does is Linux and XP server. There is talk of an 'upgrade'
to xp to allow full 64 bit ability... If it helps, the chip is to be
'backward compatable' with the older os', just won't use the hyper thread
technology.

As for your parts, just a coupla idears from my preferences...

Ram, the crucial is better. Corsair is good, but not quite as good as
Crucial or Samsung.

Burner, I prefer Lite on. Just as good as the TDK, but a bit cheaper. TDK
and Plextor used to be the top 2 in this area, but Lite On is making them
quiver...

Hard drive, Check out the Western Digital Special Edition for the 80 to 120
gig range. You will be impressed on the tests.

Modem, go for an external. Someone all ready made a good recommendation on
a couple.

NIC, skip it. Use the one onboard.

Everything else looks really good. The last thought I have, what wattage
power supply is in that case? You are running some great hardware, I would
suggest about a 400 watter, minimum of 350 watts. A lot of people may think
that is overkill, but look at the ram and video you are running. They will
take quite a bit. Also, make sure that the power supply is rated for the
P4. There is an extra connector to worry about...

I Don't know if this is what you mean by win xp server but dosen't win xp
64bit edition use a 64 bit prosseser? I'm proably wrong on this but just
checking.
