Windows NT - Is it possible to bypass password?
I messed up wife's work computer by changing the network properties
configuration from a Domain type logon to a Workgroup logon. Now, the
original password does not work and we cannot get to all her work files that
are badly needed. In other words, the NT login no longer shows the
Domain, it is
just username and password.
Is there ANY way possible to bypass this login screen, or do something do
get us into Windows? I am kind of in some trouble here and my weekend
will be a whole lot better if she could get her files.
ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated. I would be willing to PAY for help
too!
Thanks.

Install Windows NT in another directory and you'll be able to gain access to
the disk and original files.

Re: Windows NT - Is it possible to bypass password?
In the Winnt/system32/config there is a file named sam with no
extension (there is another sam file also that is a text file). One
possibility is you could rename that file to something like samold. Reboot
the computer and a new sam file will be created that will allow you log on
using a null (blank/none password) using the administrator account. Since
the sam file is recreated any users/groups in the original sam file will be
lost. Do NOT attemp this if you have any encrytped files that need to be
opened. The sam file needs to be renamed while the operating system is not
running. If the fat file system is being used you can boot from a dos floppy
(such as W98/95 boot disk) and do it from there. Otherwise you could put the
hard drive as a secondary/slave drive in another computer running
NT/W2K/XP-PRO and using the ntfs file system and rename the sam file from
that operating system, or use a ntfs boot utility. A parallel installation
of the operating system would also allow you access to your files IF you do
NOT reformat your hard drive. See link for other possibilities. Good
uck. --- Steve
