Oracle
If you don't have at least 4 years of Oracle DBA work experience don't waste your time.
I did and now I can't find a job.
In addition unlike the Unix exams which you can upgrade from version Solaris 6 to Solaris 8,
you're certification becomes a piece of paper you can throw away if you don't upgrade
every year or so.
Yes I'm not kidding, Oracle will make you rewrite all their exams from scratch to
get their money's worth.
Don't waste your time, take it from someone who has gone through this and
now it's too late.
Please take my advice seriously.
No this is not a joke.

not true
It is possible to get a job as DBA, my old co-worker is living proof. This person got DBA jr position with zero experience in Oracle and database stuff except for studying the books and no certs in it either, but had a few years doing technical IT support and this was just last summer.
IT field is hard right now, but keep persuing at what you want to do. Someone eventually will give you a chance.
Also It does hurt network network with other folks you know who already has IT position as Database admin to get you in. It always helps to know someone on the inside
Another thing is location location location.

Thanks for trying to make us feel better,
but I was in a class of 24 people and none of us are employed.
No one wants to take a chance on people with no or very little experience.
