tips on cleaning my mobo

can you guys give me some tips on cleaning the inside of my computer.
i was installing a new HD and CDRW drive the other day, and there's a
ridiculous amount of dust all over in there. i plan to buy a wrist
strap for the occasion, 'cause i don't wanna take any chances, but can
you suggest a type of brush, cloth, etc. that you've found to be
particulary effective?
~thanks

Brillo Pads usually work the best.......if you dont have them ....i would
use compressed air......from a distance....if you use it too close you will
get the Motherboard wet

Re: tips on cleaning my mobo

What a coincidence - I just cleaned out one of mine this afternoon.
I first disassemble as much as I feel comfortable with in the way of
cables, cards, etc to get a clear shot at the motherboard. Then I use
a fat (1 inch) round soft-bristled paint brush to loosen as much dust as
I can (stroke softly to avoid static buildup). Next I use a small make-up
brush to get into the tight places. Lastly I use canned air to blow
everything
out, tilting the machine (but not the can) as much as possible to blow the
dust outside the case instead of just to another part of it.
Hope this helps.

I can tell you what we do in my shop....

If the dust/dirt is very heavy, first we vacuum. I have a small, very
incredibly powerful vacuum. I use the crevice nozzle and get in there as
much as I can to get the big stuff.

Then, we use the air compressor.

We do not use canned air- that gets very expensive. You can go through a
whole can on a single PC if there is a lot of dirt. Plus, canned air can
spit out liquid.

Nope, we simply grab the nozzle for the air compressor and blow into every
crevice we can find. We do not worry too much about the motherboard
getting wet because, at least with the air compressor, no visible water
comes out as can happen with the canned air.

Also, in the cases with heavy dust/dirt, we would sometimes use both the
compressed air along with the vacuum at the same time. Someone would hold
the large vacuum nozzle close by while the other person blows out with the
compressor. This is especially useful in blowing out the PSU. Blown in
the fan area while the vacuum nozzle is on the other side of the PSU to
help take in the stuff being blown about.

Good luck!

Compressed air does a great job, if you have a compressor that is. I
don't so I use a strong vacuum cleaner along with a small brush to
loosen the dust. There are a few precautions though - I leave the system
plugged into the wall outlet to provide a ground for static discharge. I
use Static Guard spray on the brush, the vacuum cleaner nozzle and the
motherboard to avoid buildup of static and to zero the charge on the
dust so it doesn't stick to the board. Lastly, I always work with the
system on a static mat and wear a wrist strap. The key word here is
static - at worst, it can kill a component dead but usually only weakens
things a bit so they die some time later. Good luck.

Re: tips on cleaning my mobo

Use can of "compressed air". A 12 oz can is about $5 at office supply
stores, but about half that amount in 4-packs at warehouse clubs (Sam's,
BJ's, Costco).

Re: tips on cleaning my mobo

At IBM we use air compressor in room temperature. That will blast any dust
around any corner or nooks of the computer.
