Mac Issue

hello people, i have an issue with a mac, well actually it is an issue a friend is having, here is an exerpt from an email he sent me, hopefully there is a mac expert in here somewhere!

"I have a ibook G3 500mhs . I just put in 256mb(azen)144pin SDRAM SODIMM in my ibook . It only picks up 128Mb of the ram in the second slot in the system profiler of the 256mb stick. there is already 128mb onboard and it only reads 256mb total instead of 384mb! can you help me "
