presumably you have tried double-clicking on it and it said that the appropriate app couldn't be found and gave you a list of apps to try?
did you also try opening word then going insert > file?
if you were able to get your hands on acrobat distiller, i wonder if it's possible just to drag and drop the file into the app to convert it to pdf. that way you'd have a printable copy atleast.
failing that, you could email me the document and see if i can do some magic on it
