Windows 2000 Install question
Hello Again
While attempting to install Windows 2000 Pro onto a new hard drive, I got
this message:
"File /halacpi.dll could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Setup cannot
continue. Press any key to exit."
I went to the MS site, and found an article that indicated that my
hardware's power management might not be able to handle Win2k. It did
mention to try to let the installation locate and recognize the existing
processor as different type (Standard PC), which I tried, and this didn't
work either.
I also have the most recent BIOS flash installed.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this, or is there anything else that I
might want to try?
Thanks again!

Re: Windows 2000 Install question
Double check the BIOS to see if the Power Management features are User
defined or Disabled. On some (all?) boards this prevents Power Management
features.
What Motherboard is in the system?
When you allowed the computer to locate the "Standard PC" was this during
install by pressing either F5 or F7 during the screen that states "Press F6
to install a third party controller?

Also, go to Google. Search for halacpi.dll
Good luck.

Re: Windows 2000 Install question
Sorry busy as a bee,
You are running a Dell Dimension XPSR400 (or 350)?
When it POST does it show an (A013) after the above?
If not Dell has it on their site file name XPSR_A13.exe
They also show drivers for XP, so the board should support it.
That is an Oct 99 BIOS and its probably ACPI compliant.
Maybe a call to their tech support?
Good Luck, The only other thing I can think of is verify every BIOS setting.
Reset DMI. maybe try an I386 install from the drive itself?

I had a customer who had a computer crater, winxp home. I tried doing a
repair installation and I can't remember the exact error, but error code 7
was part of it. Ended up being bad memory.
Sounds like your system was running fine until you swapped the hard drive so
I have my doubts about memory. Might be worth a try though.

Re: Windows 2000 Install question
This box, the same box upon which I'm trying to insall W2K, runs fine on
'98, although, it only has 128 MB. (I have a separate, brand new 40G HD for
the W2K install) Yeah, it crashes from time to time, but not often, really,
but I was wondering, even before I read your post, whether or not it really
needs 256.
Funny thing is, at the place where I used to work, I used to get this "Error
Code 7" message from time to time, when attempting to install W2K onto
computers; this always happened when attempting to begin the install with
the boot disks. Then, when I booted from the CD itself, the installation
went on without a hitch. I'm not having the same luck now, however, when I
attempt to boot and install from the CD.
Thank you for your reply.
