Apple - mac help please

hey guys
someone gave a mac
running OS9

when the computer starts
i see the happy face but then
a message saying

system error
unimplemented trap
restart and hold the shift to bypass extensions
ok
i do that and i get to the same error
i tried putting the OS9 cd in the drive
and holding the C key
i tried holding the space key
i tried apple+control+p+r

no matter what
i end up in the same warning

any ideas?
this is my fist mac so i been reading the book that came with it
