I'm having a problem with a win98se box that was working, then moved to another location. I wasn't involved in the move so I have no specifics about how it was taken apart, moved, or out back together for that matter.

The issue is this, niether the ps2 mouse port or the ps2 keyboard port are working now. I have tried known good mice and keyboards but still nothing works. The mobo is a Gigabyte dual bios with a 900Ghz slot A Duron. The funny thing is the computer boots up without telling me there is no Keyboard attached. I have tried a boot disk in case the was some problem with the OS, but still no luck. A serial mouse will work but not the ps2 port. I have physically look at the mobo and can see no issue at the port.

Any ideas would be helpful. At this point, I'm just going to replace the motherboard.

Thanks

Try checking your BIOS and make sure it didn't get disabled somehow. Then if thats not the problem, you can always go USB on the keyboard with a mouse port so you only take up one USB port. Opposed to going to a new motherboard, unless your upgrading at the same time.

Whoever put the computer back together most likely turned the computer on, then plugged in the keyboard and mouse. That will blow the ports. I've seen that happen many times.

Try USB devices.

Thanks for the replies.

My guess is that the keyboard and mouse were plugged in after the power was turned on. Nothing is disabled in the Bios. I could use USB devices and they do work. I was hoping someone else could think of somethng I hadn't already. I have never seen this issue before.

My thaks again to both of you for your suggestions.

Wow I didn't realize the ps/2 were that sensitive. Is it just because it's a newer mb? I've used old IBMs, Gateways (really old) in lab class & sometimes I would forget & plug them in. Had no problems.

I've not really worked on the newer pcs.

It's actually a very common problem (old and new PC's). It usually only blows the mouse port.

You should always power down the computer before connecting a PS2 mouse.

Whoops! Thanks for the heads up.

I had read that some time ago (pre-tech days; post-dinosaur days) and when I told one of our accountants about it, she said, "I always unplug the mouse with the computer running." I said, "Okay. But just so you know, you shouldn't."

BTW--when a port blows, can the port be replaced, or is that cause for a full mobo replacement?

It won't automatically blow the port every time, but it IS what causes the port to blow.

Literally, 100% of the cases where a mouse wasn't responding, if a replacement mouse didn't work I'd ask if they plugged the mouse in while the computer was on... the answer was always yes.

PS2 ports are integrated onto the mb, so you can't just replace the ports.
