ok, heres the deal: i have a nice box with a soko dragon mb, athlon xp1800, 512 ddr, hercules 3d prophet 4000 32 meg kyro 2 vid card, etc etc

anyway one day i was moving my monitor and all of the sudden the monitor went black... i wasnt jerking it or anything and i didnt do it with a lot of force so i dont know why that happened... anyway i proceeded to check another known good monitor with the box and no good... i then tested both monitors with a known good box and they both worked... so im thinking terrific, i just shorted out my video card somehow... anyway, i proceeded to order a new video card... a hercules 3d prophet 4500 64 meg... got a good deal on it and im happy... so it gets here, i plug it in to the agp slot... power up... beep beep beep etc, no picture... no nothing... now im thinking maybe my motherboard is shot or something...

does anyone have any suggestions on what i might have missed or how i could possibly test the agp slot with a multimeter or something?

i was thinking of trying a pci video card just to see if the board is functioning at all, but i dont have one on hand

put both video cards in another system to test them. If they're good, it's your motherboard.

problem is, they are the new type of agp cards and this is the only box in my house that has a motherboard to accomidate them... all my other boxes are older

most any computer shop will test the card for you but imho it aint worth the money.

you must know someone who is willing to check the card out. but i dont see any way of out your MB being bad.

two cards not working is a bit too unusual. not impossible but...

have you physically inspected the MB? it is possible that when you moved the monitor, if the card wasnt fastened tightly down, the card could have rocked in the slot and popped a connection i suppose. but to have that happen is not a likely possibility either.

a soldered joint by itself may not be extremely durable, but your AGP slot has a lot of them real close together so it makes for a very durable connection.

check to see if any cracks are visible in the plastic portion of the slot. also get a magnifying glass and see if any of the connectors might be bent or maybe try not putting the hold down screw on the video card and wiggling it when its powered up to see if you get anything.

but as far as the pci card goes, it would be on a totally separate signal path i would think so it would probably work fine.

Try removing and then reseating your RAM

The beeps: listen and take note of how many beeps and how they come out (IE. long beeps, short beeps, pauses).

The Card: Hercules I will no longer buy. personally had more trouble than fun with those cards. just my personal opinion...

Reseat: ...everything (especially the video card) and make sure you do not have any loose metal shavings inside.

BIOS: Check the BIOS to make sure it's not disabled. you should be able to plug in the onboard video and it will work if the BIOS is disabling the card (you do have onboard video card, right?).

Check: ...your video cable's Pins. Any bent pins? Straighten them out and plug it back in...

Good Luck!

Check if youīre AGP card is sitting like it should in itīs slot.
If it would have moved in itīs slot
the computer may behave like the CPU is dead, that is nothing on the screen and no beeb (assuming the loudspeaker is good).
