Is it possible to share a dial-up connection on a small network?

My desktop (With a 56k modem) will be running either Windows 98 or 2000.

My laptop will have Windows 98 and my Dads laptop will be have Windows 95.

I have to do this wirelessly since mom doesn't want ethernet cables running all over the place.

DSL or cable is not avalible where i live and satellite is too expensive. The dial-up connection has to share a line with my dads fax machine so it can't always be connected.

Sure. Just run something along the lines of a proxy server or ICS on the laptop. There are also a number of access points out there that have a built in modem. That would probably be the best way to go if you can afford it, since then you won't be dependant on any one machine being up for others to get on.

No XP machines so ICS is out. Try this one by analogX. It has been around for a few years, very small, easy to set up, works with 9x systems and is FREE. It is at version 4.x I used it maybe 4 years ago and it worked well

I second that. I used analogx a few years ago, and it works well.

You have a Third for AnalogX. I used it a couple of years ago as well. It's pretty good.

Thanks guys! Weird... Last time i posted here everyone just "you can't do that its impossible... Go get DSL..." .

I can't try analogx yet since i am still trying to find a case for my desktop and i don't have my NICs yet. i plan to use 802.11b cards peer to peer.

So far my "network" consists of a laplink cable and direct cable connection between the two laptops. I just can't figure out why the computers don't show up in Network neiborhood... At least my friends and i can play Starcraft and Quake!

Thanks for the help guys!

You are welcome I guess we never saw your previous post; it happens. Oh if you are running win XP go turn the internal firewall off. If you systems show up in network neiborhood then go read up on the internal firewall to make them friendly IP's. Sometimes you have to share something like a floppy first.

While run is a relative term. I have seen systems like you describe with XP and Office XP running along with cable internet connections. It meets the minimum requirements.

I could run XP on this? Wow... I could give it try sometime. I hate shelling out 100 bucks for it only to find out that it barely runs.

And i doubt my parents would let me buy it. I just bought an MP3 player (Creative Nomad muvo 64mb...) and a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card off ebay so it will be serveral months before they allow me to buy any more computer stuff.

Depends on your pain threshold. For me 266MHz running anything is pain but it does work. You have 66MHz more than the minimum and 32 Meg more than the minimum. Your disk is light XP and Office XP and swap file will put you at around 2.5 gig for practical running.

Yeah all my stuff is at least two years old... I really do like my computer even if it is old.

I might give XP a try.

Right now my computer is a Compaq Armada 4220T P233mmx, 4 gig hd, 96 megs of ram, 4 meg non-accelerated video card.

Just bought it off ebay for $120.00. The last armada i had died about 6 months ago so i was stuck with a 486 with 8 megs of ram. Ever tried to run internet explorer on a 486? Its a nightmare.

But now i have 2 good batteries and a parts laptop in case i ever break anything on this laptop.

I'm so glad i have this laptop now! Now i can play Quake 2 and Half-life! Woohoo!

tekdeal.com has XP home OEM edition for 66.94 accessed through www.pricegrabber.com

to satisfy the OEM requirement, they send you a power "Y" connector with the CD.

i've used these guys 4 times in the past month. shipping is ridiculous and its obviously where they are making the money as im sure they carry no stock but still at $72.94 total, still a good deal.

I went an visited my brother and he had an extra disc. We tried to install it but we couldn't get the setup program to run.

in a compaq, there is probably proprietary setup you need to run.

if you are sure you are going to 86 your system, then you might want to take your hard drive out and put it into another system as a slave. then check to see if you have a small hidden partition. if so, then you will most likely have hardware issues but nothing major probably.

the reason is that some OEM's add configuration for the hardware in hidden partitions like this so in case of problems, you can always role back to factory condition easily. but this requires the special install and recovery disk from compaq to access and read the partition. with out the disk, you might as well delete it.

now i have had systems like this where the disk was lost and we wiped out the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of windows and there were problems with the onboard stuff like the sound and modem. but we didnt use the modem and disabled the onboard sound with motherboard jumpers and put in a $10 PCI card and it worked fine.

you could try to get another disk from compaq, but its been my experience that you might be wasting your time.

also remember XP aint win98... that "extra disk" thing wont do it. i build systems and i have one system with XP home on it that is used almost exclusively to test hardware. i average once a month or so of having to call microsoft to explain why it appears that i have installed the same copy of XP on more than 3 systems. (yes i have to call every 3 changes or so but keep in mind, things like MB's count as 3!!)

now i have never had a problem with them and it only takes about 5 min... but im sure they are keeping a very close eye on that system. i do have it running the setiathome client so it logs on to the internet to upload work units every day and i think that microsoft has placed some sort of tracker on the system to watch that it doesnt move around or something... but maybe im paranoid. or some- HEY!! gotta go, i just heard something outside. go to check it out.

Yeah i don't blame microsoft for watching XP closely. Everyone is just burning their copies of Win9x and giving them to friends.

We tried using an adapter and setting the drive up as a slave... We probably could have got it to work but we ran out of time. It was 3 in the morning before we quit.

My brother had a copy of XP that he wasn't using. I think he has like 3 copies and he only uses one.

He has kinda switched halfway to red Hat Linux with something called the Fedora Core.. Not sure what it exactly was but the OS was beautiful.

I doubt Compaq has a version of XP for this laptop! It originally came with windows 95!

ok, i would get a win98 boot disk and reformat your hard drive and try to install XP on the Master drive. it sounds to me that you are trying to install to an external drive?

also, you need to go to compaq's (HP??) website and check your model for any upgrade notes. i have done a few compaqs and all of them that i can remember required BIOS and MB chipset driver upgrades.

they do make it semi easy for you. just punch in your computer and BIOS rev number and they will tell you if it can be upgraded and what you need to install to make it work.

if you really want my opinion, you should just tell your parents you want to go into an A+ cert class. pass it, then build your own computer. you will be much happier with the results and there is no way your parents will complain about you wanting to further your education!

well i multitask, but im not that good. but i usually have 2 surfing at a time and in the case of ms updates then all will be downloading (provided win98 has an update which is about half the time) but i do have the setiathome client running which automatically uploads and downloads new work units as they are finished. i average about 15-25 a day of those. i also use the client to see how badly a system will heat up. i figure, it gives me an idea of how reliable a system will be and helps look for ET at the same time.

i generally dont do any automatic processes if i can help it. i have AVG anti virus running on all my machines and they update frequently, but i dl the update manually once and then copy the file to each of the 4 systems.

Last night i got my Pentium 2 running. So now all i need is one NIC and a crossover cable and i am ready to go!

I will only surf the web with one computer at once. I only download at 2.5k per second so 2 people would be out of the question!

2.5kBps?? hmmm no wonder you only go one at a time...as for me... i Blaze along at at least 5.5 sometimes even 6kBps!
