I am considering replacing my wired network with an 802.11G router. I've been looking at Dlink and Netgear but I am liking the Linksys WRT54G. It costs around $75 on ebay, has MAC address filtering, SPI firewall, WPA, 4 port switch, and it's Linksys who is now backed by CISCO and I'm sure offers good support. Any thoughts on if this is a good choice?

Also, I am really not sure if this will work, but I'm wondering if I can have the Linksys in one room in my house and be able to connect in the garage next door (through a few walls and outdoors). Would it be able to pick up the signal?

I have never been a Linksys Fan, but i see these Routers a lot when i visit my Customers. ( I am a Dlink Fan, been using these for Years and the Support is uhmmm, ok, i guess.)
They are easy to set up, secure and have come a long way...set them up and forget them.
One thing i always liked about the Dlink is their enormous Coverage, same as the new USRobotics Routers, quite amazing.
I don't have any Data on the new Linksys right now, but i think, they will perform as well. And having the Name "Cisco" in the Trademark now, will only help, i am sure.

I am working on a interesting wireless Network right now, using an outdoor-Antenna to span the Network across 1600 Feet.
(big Car-Dealer, from Service-Area to Salesfloor is around 1200 Feet)
I would go for the Linksys, if the Price is right, even though i wouldn't buy it from E-bay, too many re-conditioned Items are offered there.
Good Luck.

Sorry, forgot to answer that question:
Absolutely!
Place the Wireless Router in different strategic places around the House, then do some Scanning.(netstumbler.com).You will find that the Signal travels easily through walls, if not too thick and no brick is used.
You can always add more Accesspoints later as you go.
I sometimes carry my Laptop to my Neighbors Pool ,and stil pick up a Signal.

sorry about the long stories.

Well the houses are brick. So I won't have any luck?

Gosh, I don't know exactly. Maybe through 3 walls, 2 of them being brick and maybe 80 or more feet.

I've had one for quite awhile and it works great. Never had one problem with it.

I've had no problems with the unit being located downstairs and going all the way out to the end of my yard outside and picking up a decent signal. It's about 100 feet.

This would be my first WiFi experience. And believe it or not, I have never had a laptop computer. I want to get one of those soon too possibly. What's the place place to get one? I checked out dell.com and ebay.

Got my WRT54G and Linksys WirelessG card at Best Buy. I see the routers usually offered in my neck of the woods for $79.99 (after the $20 mail in rebate). I forget how much I paid for the card, I think $59.99.

Got my laptop from Dell. Haven't had any issues with it either.

So did I.

I filled out that same rebate form.

I just flashed the router last week. It's been working great since I bought it last August to replace my BEFSR11.
