| i have a really old computer i got it in 1999 its a clone
i know it was on its last leg but i didn't expect it to go at christmas
i turned it on this morning and it shot out a hugeeeeeeeeeeee blue spark i really don't know if it came from the monitor or the tower {i suspect the tower}
but after the spark it worked fine
i shut it down normally and during the day i turned it on twice an it worked as normal
then in the night i tried to turn it on and well i got nooooooo power at all
well i think its the power supply unit that's the trouble but could my motherboard get any damages??
any useful tips i should know before buying a unit and changing the power supply??
i'v got the know how to do it i think but i never got any practice
any suggestions would be appreciated

| 1999?
I hate to tell you this....
but....
really, dump it, it's not worth repairing.
If you want some good practice, start building a new one.
just my 2 cents. | |

| Gee is it even an ATX motherboard? 1999 is probably socket 7 or a very early slot1. You would have to use a power supply adapter dongle if it is a p8 p9 connector board.
Dump it, you can build a new system many times more powerful for ~$200 U.S. For example in California Frys is selling 1.6GHz Durons with motherboard for $49. A cheap case with power supply is $25, CD $15, 256 DDR 333 $39. Cheap 64MB video card $30. If you wait until after the new year memory price will collapse again like it alway does and you can add more if you wish.
Pull your old floppy if you want one, I use pen drives mostly now or mini CD-RW's. Use your old hard drive or buy a new one for $1 a gig, or much less once you hit 100 gig. Buying a power supply without the cabinet costs more than a power supply with a cabinet and the adapter if needed will cost you as much as $8 dollars.

| no power at all poor advice.gees what a bunch of poor advice must work in the sales industry somewere first do asearch on the net if its a at style power supply their still available as new or rebuilt general less than 50 bucks total including shipping seen rebuilt ones on the net for about ten bucks gees guys do your homework and quit the sale pitches.and modt socket 7 super socket 7 motherboards are dual power format both at and atx.if no damage accoured to the motherboard why replace it.I seen people still using 266's and less they still do everything people need to do as long as their not gaming.hell I still have a working 486 two socket dual power capable socket 7 motherboards a slot A that plays everygame I've treid so far.gee just like sales people replace it.geesI'd say do a unmouted test using a freinds power supply first just set the mother boerd on a box next to a known good working at if its at computor hook up the power supply and nessary connectors with just a vid card and a single memory strip in see if the board post if it post its generally ok.get a new power supply if no post then replace the motherboard.and most motherbopard mannuals can be downloaded off the net to tell you were to hook up the nessary connections.also when you take your motherboard out you can write dowwn which wire goes were with a simple drawning layout.no big Schematics needed. | |
|
| oh when you lay the motherboard down on the box if you still have the antistatic bag that it came in lay that bown over the boxfirst or find one or good to a computor repair place and see if they'll give you one most will.If they ask why you need one some will Iam sure tell them you have to sent a motherboard in your factory warrenty repair and you mistakenly through yours out.If you cann't find one somewere else or don't have yours they'll usually give it to no problems if you ask.pardon any typo's Iam not an english major. spoted one in the first post modt should be most not a typing major either . | |

| Dear Kilz
Welcome to the Forum, first of all.
Secondly, as far as I can tell from your senseless post with terrible spelling, you are suggesting to repair that old Computer, even telling us that you use an old 486…
Pentium 266 are still used where you live?
Let me tell you, my friend:
I throw Pentium 300’s and 600’s away every day, they aren’t worth my Time.
If a Customer comes to me asking to repair or troubleshoot an old P II 300 @ $55.00/hour Lab time, the new Motherboard with 256 megs of Ram and an Athlon XP2500+ for less than $250.00 installed doesn’t sound as bad after all.
Perhaps you’ve been living under a Rock, but where I live, a PIII 800 is the absolute minimum to at least enjoy the Internet with all it’s bells and whistles, I am talking streaming media, Flash, Java and all the other Formats you find on all kinds of Websites.
And look at some of the minimum or recommended requirements, that you will need to run simple apps like outlook 2003 or Excel 2003. ( Not to mention Photoshop 7, but you must have never heard of such application, otherwise you wouldn’t have dumped such nonsense-crap in a single post)
Azimuth40 and me have probably built machines while you were still in pre-school, and our advice was rock-solid to rather built a newer system, just look at the prices, azimuth40 posted.
Lastly, it is beyond me why you dug up such an old thread to create your first (rather moronic) post. I hope, we’ll hear from you again, but next time, please think before posting.
Cheers! | |

its not that old second no Iam not living under a rock or in the stoneage age or anything Iam living in the real world.I've got a slot A board with a 650 cpu Amd-slot A
that does everything it was purchased around 99 in fact it gets out on the net every single day.It plays almost all of the current games games that I like anyways it play Medal of Honor all versions aa spearhead and breakthrough very well and on the net against other people.I've played bf1942 with it a couple of flight sims with it and have had everything from 95 to 2k Os's on it and could put linux on it too or could get xp to run on it or a mac if I wanted to.it run almost all current apps. software.the only thing really moronic here is your advice to replace a system when most likely all thats needed is a simle power supply swap.I changed them out in or under 15 minutes and most people can do it.bet you could almost train a chip to do it.in fact you really don't need a brand new advanced motherboard to get on the net or anything it is mostly your connection that is the most of your speed on the net.and heres a kicker for you their are still tons of people out their that are on dial up service not cable or dsl fact on that the slow megahertz cpu might only be a little slower in post web pages but its the connection type that is the most important as for speed not the cpu.another thing for you to consider is with the economy the way it is a lot of people aren't ready or want to spend the money right now your a new system especially since all they might need is a new power supply(25-60 bucks)and lower on the net.to keep their current system running and for the the guy saying thoughs nice lower prices thats sale items first and fry's generally has low stock count on sale items been to a fry's first day of a sale several times and they were all ready out of stock on that item and his prices for a decent board are alittle low.I myself liked asus boards but I also have others. My 650 probably will do anything that your new athlon xp 2500+ will do may not be as fast but good enough.surpised that you even say amd considering your PII and PIII statementsyou can live in your I got the latest and great fantasy life and update upgrade every six months or less but most people out their have got house payments-rent ,bills to pay and need to save a buck or two here and their thats why theirs walmarts.but the fact is if the system works right now and the power supply is what died they just want to replace the powersupply and maybe update later they've probably got enough credit card debt.put you still push to get them to buy a new system.gee how nice of you to spend their money but want do you expect from a computor sale shop.the word repair used buy most computor shops theirs someting moronic the should say R&R remove and replace shop cause thats really all they do any more thank good some motherboard manufactures actual got decent warranties on their motherboards lucky for me too when both of my asus boards went out at within a couple of months I broke out the old die hard super 7 socket amd k6-2 hooked it up to the net sent emails to asus and a response back called them up got a confirmed rma number sent them in to asus to get repaired not some local computor R&R shop that would tell me you nee a new motherboard.got mine back from asus thimk ones a replacement the other was repaired. and back in bussiness that you asus for three year warranties on your motherboards.but you noticed I broke out an old back up super 7 socket motherboard and was able to function on the net and everything under your thinking I would have been just S.O.L. and unable to get out on the net or anything.but I did with a lesser computor let that stew in your brain a while and fact I've got backups for the backup I've still got a functioning 486 dx4 that boot rather fast it run 95 and will run 98 but we here you go your not running xpwell mister theirs alot of people not running xp including alot of bussinesses in fact here one for you microsoft was suppose to kill off 98SE support a 1-04 but guess what they didn't in fact that sent out a note saying that they were continuing support for a year or two more why you might ask is because alot of bussinesses still use 98 and mircosoft got a lot of messages from them basically they drop their support we drop you messages think they got the point.not everybody runs XP or has the latest and greatest out their I have a relative right now working a intrenship somewere and guess what oh the horror for you they still got working pentiums oh the horror of it all working pentiums but hey it a nonprofit outfit they only got limited fund through grants and all. but they are upgrading alittle he said.he actually put xp on a pII I think thats what he said but it was like a 350 but it ran although real slow his words not mine but it ran is the point on a 350.next like I said I've got several computors and two newer than the 650 but the 650 is the main everything rig right now.I've also got a backup duron 1.2 or 1.1 gig gaming rig and a athlon xp 1.76 gig 2000+ rig for gaming for more intensive graphically but the 650 it the main do everythingrig its not brand new not the fastest but it keeps hummimg a long and gaming to right up their with everybody else.In fact played MOHAA on it last night with and agaist my relative last night and was doing just fine stay up with his newer rig.so the real only thing moronic is your first statement and your second response back to my post.I shocked that you even suggest a AMD athlon chip considering your PII and PIII statements but at least maybe your mind is opening up a little.but oh well I popped here while looking for something else and thought I would put in two cents too and maybe actually help him or someone else who might stubble in here instead of tring to make a sale like you mister moderator mister R&R computor service. and another thing could have sworn I unchecked that notification thing when I sign up just too put my two cents in.something fishy their?but its off for sure here
|
| oh and so oh the horror of it all I make typo's missed keys and yes doubled keys like hitting the s and d keys instead of just the s key oh the horror of it all Iam human the horror of it all I not a enlish major or a type it oh the horror of it all or in the computor sales bussiness.oh the horror Iam just a lowly human that makes typo's doubled and missed keys oh the horror of it all and oh the horror of it all I forget to spell check almost all the time oh the horror of it all Iam human but most people can read and figure it out. should work on the last one though maybe someday but heck I fix machines for a living and sometimes yes down to bad components when possible when time allows and the machine can stay down for a while which seems less and less these days and all oh the horror of it all. | |

You must work very cheaply to waste time on 20 dollar parts. Before you try to impress us look at the number of members for this site. You will find the best of the best floating through as time permits. As far as the horror of it all I started in 1970 and was a designer before I saw the sea change. If I can get over it so can you.
This is now a commodity business and labor costs more than parts. IT is now about solving problems. Those that do it fastest will suceed, those that approach it as a hobby will remain hobbiests that tinker on the side.
You are not going to may many friends here with your current attitude.
Oh and it is an old thread by internet standards. Do you really think someone is going to wait 4 months, checking everyday for a response, to look for a rebuilt power supply for $50 when you can buy and entire case for far less? Have you met Vinny yet over in the general board? He likes time warps too.
This is a certification centric web site. Best practices on most certification tests says that you do not repair power supplies you replace them.
I have a couple of 8 inch floppies and some 5.25 ones that you can have cheap if you like rebuilding antiques. Who knows maybe you are right and some PC's will reach 57 Chevy or bathtub Porsche status. So far my Altair and AT with piggyback RAM are still collecting dust.
Best of luck to you bud, I think that you will need it.

| Delivery is the key to any conversation and quite frankly kilz, yours needs some work.
However, thanks for the laughs. Especially the basic thought that anyone who isn't a tinkerer using 10 year old technlogy is a salesman. Too funny.
I'm not a salesman, but I've been working with and on systems for more years than I care to share. I don't try to stay on the bleeding edge of technology, but I also know that you can only shoot so much buck into a dead horse.
If the system does everything he needs and he can locate a replacement PS cheap, then repalcing the PS is a good route to take. If that's not the case then your advise is a waste of time, money and effort. Making your little salesman pot shot comments towards Azimuth and Deja were out of line and unnecessary, as their advise was excellent.
You really should read and or re-read azimuth's last post as it is spot-on.

I can only sit here and imagine a guy sitting in his garage surrounded by a "ton" of junk (aka. important parts to systems, aka. "components") working dilligently at a failed capacitor on a power supply only to find the coil is burned out instead. heheh... I have a lot of "components" lying around my house too, but I have to know when to let some things go... even if I think I could use it someday. | ok forgive me if i get something wrong here but i gave up on reading Kilts' post.
but i did gather that you run Medal of Honor on a 650 Mhz computer?
i have done that too, but to call it "running" is stretching the truth in an extreme way.
in fact i dont call that "playing" i call it "self torture"
currently i have 3 P-3 computers, 2 -500Mhz and a 700 Mhz computer i am selling complete with mouse, keyboard, monitor etc, all have either 192 or 256 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drives, modems.
all that for 175$ and i cant sell them simply because for another 100$ you can get a 2 Ghz P-4.
now please dont tell me that you cater to the immigrant crowd that has a problem understanding english and you actually charge good money for the services you describe... |
