I haven't heard much about them, but then again I haven't really been scouring the hardware sites. Would be nice to put 9 gigs on one DVD.

Well, since Pioneer already demonstrated last year in October dual-layer burning using a plain old simple DVR-A06 ( Firmware-upgrade), i would say around April, May the latest.

Looking at the current prices for DVD-Burners: $79.00 for a dual Format 4X and around $129.00 for a 8X dual Format.
Cost for a 8X DVD+R is $1.29

16X DVD Burners are also around the Corner, from Phillips, Pioneer and Plextor. Sony announced not to develop more single-layer Burners, instead are concentrating on dual-layer Burners as well.

Ah, yes....and it will go back to 2.4X Speed again, with the new dual-layer Format.

I have a Pioneer DVR-104. Can I expect a firmware upgrade soon to make it dual layered you think?

And will we be able to use the same DVD-R's that we use now for dual layered burning? Or will we need different disks?

I don't think the 104 will do it.(DVD- only)
And, of course, you will new Media for dual layer burning.
Think of two layers of very thin foil embedded in the Disk. First you burn the bottom layer, then scip to the next top-layer.
Current DVD+ and DVD- Disks have only one layer inside.

We'll see if Pioneer releases the Firmware-upgrade.
They would shoot into their own foot, so to speak. They could make a lot more Money selling new Drives.
But then, as Consumers, we would be very happy if Pioneer does a release...and buy more products from them anyways.

Update:

Philips announces DVDRW 885K dual layer drive
Philips is the first to double the recording capacity of the DVD+R technology. Their new DVDRW 885K drive supports the dual layer technology, writing the top layer at 8x speed and the bottom layer at 2.4x. Single layer discs are recorded at 4x speed, while DVD-R(W) are supported in read only. The new drive will be demonstrated in the CeBIT 2004 expo. The retail price is not known yet, but the drive should hit the store shelves on July in Germany.
