HELP

Help Please:

I am having problems with a floppy drive. I checked it with a multi-meter and it checks out fine. When I put a floppy in the drive and click on the A: drive it reads, "Do you want to format it"? I click yes and it says it can not due to it running in a 16 bit mode in Dos. How do I get it to stop running in Dos mode? I tried to restart in dos mode and it would go straight back into windows. By the way, it is windows 98.. A friends computer.
Thanks Fireymom

Does it happen with every floppy you try or just that one floppy?
I use floppys like paper clips. If I have any problems with one, I just trash it and use another.

It is with every floppy that I try. It is not the floppy its self. When I do a "regedit" under run it says that the floppy is running under 16 bit Dos mode. Says something about active x. I do not have the pc in front of me to tell you exactly what it says and I apologize for that.

Have you tried formatting the disks using the standard way?

Also, does the computer have all the Windows Updates?

Did the friend run a dos program that ended abnormally? Microsoft says sometimes when that happens it won't exit DOS mode even when you restart. So try to restart the dos program and then end that program normally. If that wasn't the case, we'll look at something else.

Also, try and find out what that ActiveX message was.

Bleck win98!?!?!?!?!
dude when did this start happening?
try a regedit /restore back to a date you know it was working.
if that dont werk

remove the floppy driver reboot and reinstall.
if that dont werk

clear the cmos

or

drop the computer on the floor and in a menacing voice yell "THAT'LL TEACH YA!"

Hey, some of us don't get to rush out and drop a couple thousand bucks just cause we want to. We work with what we have till we can do better. Win98 still runs most of the apps most people just absolutely have to have. It's quirky and not as stable as anything based on NT, but it will run if you keep it fed and cleaned.

ok, dont know if it was ended with a dos program and if it was abnormal. This is a pc that I was working on from a friends work. I have tried to reconnect it and all the normal stuff and no luck. I did do a regedit and under the floppy tab it reads that this is being used as a 16 dos mode application. This is my problem

A missing HSFLOP.PDR file from the Windows ..\system\iosubsys directory will cause floppy drives (A to function in 16 bit mode. There are some viruses that will erase this file.

Thanks so much Theknee

First locate the file with the find files and folder by clicking start and than find.Type in hsflop.pdr and click find now.

A new one can be extracted from the the .cab (cabinet) to the same location but you must rename the file first with new name or extention I prefer changing the extension to .old and leave it in the same folder .the size is about 30k. Use this link to learn on how to do the extract for various OS .

Very good--that's good to know. There are so many viruses out there that do so many different things that I wouldn't have stumbled on that one randomly. Thanks, knee.
