| So..what do YOU do with your outdated hardware? What's your favorite option for recycling beyond selling or giving it to Goodwill? | |

| I've heard of some that convert them to routers, but I don't have the expertise to try it.
Your idea is a good one also.

| i don't think you can use as routers but you can use it as sever if you know how to set it | |

| You can use a PC as a router in Unix, Linux or Windows. You need two NIC's. You can't use 2000 Pro and I'm not sure about XP. You can use win 95/98 and NT as well as WIndow server OS's.

| Older hardware? Lemme tell you what i have.
First is my Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. PII 366. I use it for school, internet, games, mp3's, Palm desktop...
Then there's my Emachines Celeron 466. It has an onboard ATI Rage Pro, so i use it for games alot along with music and storage. Its my Half-life machine, complete with lambda painted on the side!
My AST 486 laptop! It just kinda sits on the shelf, sometimes i use it for word processing and a bit of Mutiplayer Doom or Abuse.
And lastly my Palm M105. 8mb of storage! I use that for the normal palm stuff plus games when i dont have my laptop handy. Color screen? Psh! Who needs it?!
Im 15 (16 tomorrow!) so money can be hard to come by but my setup is working fine right now! I can't play Halo, but who cares?
Now if only i could get some wireless cards...

| You know what's kind of sad. I work at a university. Some of our staff has new machines (3 GHz processors with a gig of RAM) and some of the staff has Pentium II 166 MHz with 32MB of RAM. Every department has their own budget and can spend it on whatever they want. Obviously, some departments don't give a rat's arse about technology.
The only policy we have in place is we will only support computers running Windows 2000 or XP. For the departments that still have W95 (yep, i'm not kidding), W98, or NT, they're on their own.
I have some departments upgrading their 1 GHz computers, so I just give their old computers to the departments who still run the W95 and W98 machines.
Sometimes I miss the days of the corporate world where the IT department can enforce the technology minimums.

| Donate to the church or give it to the family that need PC, but not able to afford extra cost. | |

| Yep! That's how I obtained my first system. | |

| to back up Kasor's post, not everyone has a pc(almost though)
there are people who have never used a pc and would like to but don't for various reasons.
money, fear of new techno, etc, etc,
the way i get rid of my old pc's is to simply ask around and email to friends, family telling them i have a system avail.
if no takers and i am tired of looking at the old system i put a note on some local apartment bulletin boards(in the office and laundry rooms, workout rooms, etc)
someone has always called and most are so grateful they give me a little $$ for the trouble. |
