| Have a bunch of Cmpq EN small form factors. There are two groups, one group has the model CRN-8241B CD-ROM drive. The others I can't recall at this moment, just suffice to say that there is nothing wrong with these. The CRN-8241B's however, are being a real pain! They will intermittently read, or not read. (mostly won't!) I have tried everything I can think of, (even a few more things!!), and I can't get them to read a CD. I did get one to run Win98 install after booting from a boot disk, but after the install completed, Windows hangs on the splash screen. I have tried flashing the BIOS, updating the firmware and nothing! Any ideas?? Any help will be appreciated. | |

Yep! Tried everything I could think of, just doesn't want to work right. Really beginning to tick me off! I can install Windows by booting from a floppy and then running off the CD, but after the install, Windows hangs on the splash screen.?? (Checked Technet for that one too, didn't work either!) Funny thing is, I can't get it to see a CD any other way, like when I want to run Ghost.??? Just tells me the drive is not available, and then the good ol' A/R/F message. Something is definately screwy with these particular drives, just don't know what it is yet.

| At my last job they had a lot of Compaq EN sff computers. They were terrible quality machines. We often had problems with the CD ROMs, motherboards, video cards, hard drives,... you name it. Nothing on those machines was stable. Whenever they would upgrade a computer, we would keep the old one and would immediately part it out to fix the others.
I'm not a big fan of Compaq/HP computers.

Thanks, but that's really no help. All the machines are the same, and they all have the same issue, so I can't part them out and use the parts. Does anyone have any idea for a solution to this problem? And like I posted earlier, I have tried the firmware update.
Thanks,

| My comment wasn't a solution. I was only commenting that Compaq/HP makes a low quality product.
Have you called HP tech support? If this is happening on all of the same model computers, they'll know how to fix it.

Sorry, didn't mean it that way, just frustrated with these things. Yeah, tried HP/Compaq TS, and no help there either. (What a shock! ) Guess I'll just keep plugging away and see if I can resolve it on my own,
