| I'm looking to buy a usb 2.0 pcmcia card for my Dell laptop (P3 - 500mhz). I've searched the web and local stores, but I'm confused.
I've seen some cards that are powered by a power supply that plugs into a wall. Others use a converter cable that goes from the card to your mouse port. Still others aren't powered at all.
I have a new external HP 4x DVD drive. This has it's own power supply. My question is...Do I need the pcmcia card powered? I want to use the DVD's full ability. Right now I run it off my USB 1.0, (which HP doesn't recommend), and it's very slow.
I'd appreciate any thoughts/comments.

Plugging into the mouse port huh? Never heard of that. You won't get much power from that port anyway.
Typical USB PC Cards for notebooks have enough power for things like mice, webcam, card readers, etc that don't require all that much power.
However things like external HDDs and CD devices need much more power and therefore also need to be plugged into the wall to work.

| Thanks for the reply Deja-vu, but I asked whether it was necessary to have external power to the usb card....and you send me a link to an ad? Uh, that didn't answer the question.
Anyway, I appreciated the attempt.

| USB "cards" draw power from the computer.
USB "hubs" can be either powered by the computer or plugged into the wall.
