I have an Abit Motherboard KT7A raid. I do not have the raid hooked up. I also have a TDK veloCD burner. The burner has been working fine, until the other day. Now when it is hooked up the light stays on and the door does not open. So I have changed at the cable, that was not it. I took the drive out and it works fine in two other computers. On this particular system, it does not show up in the bios. The power supply and case are both new. The bios is the latest one. I have been on Abit site and TDk's site and there are no issues. I am running Windows XP Pro, it has an Athlon 1.0 GB processor and 512 K of Ram. The drive has been working fine in this computer even after changing out the case and the power supply. I am baffled here because the drive works fine in other computers. I have another CD Rom hookedup to the same IDE channel and it works fine. I hooked my hard drives up to the same IDE channel and they workd fine, so it is not the boars. If anyone has any suggestions as to something I missed, I would appreciate it.

check your ASPI-Layer. The newest one is on the Adaptec-Website. There is also a little Tool you can download, called "aspik", that will check for the newest layer.
Have you tried to re-install your burning-software?

yes , but the burner is not being detected in the bios, at least on this computer.Very strange. I will try that tool though. Thanks.

By detected in the bios do you mean the black screen? I have seen this on 5 or 6 system after an upgrade. The drive reset is too slow and the BIOS wait time too fast. Press reset once or twice and see if it shows up. If it does you will have to live with that little trick or switch drives or beg for a firmware upgrade.

Yes I tried the cable first. LOL , IN fact I tried 3 cables jsut to be sure but I have another CD Rom hooked up to the same cable and IDE channel and it works fine. Tried different jumper settings. Hit it with a hammer(just kdding). It will not work in this particular system.
By detected in the bios I mean when you go into the bios setup , it is not detected. Cannot get it to auto detect, cannot select it manually. The light stays on and the door does not open. Tried different power cables. It works fine in any other system I put it in. I have also tried black candles and incense but that did not work either.
Just thought maybe someone here might have an idea of something I did not try.

Try a DOS floppy that has drivers that can recognize your CD-ROM. Forget about burning CD's for now. You want to see if basic software can recognize your hardware.

It is odd that the BIOS doesn't see your hardware. You might want to tell us your configuration. IDE cables aren't what they used to be. UDMA for a hard drive is different than UDMA for a CD-ROM.

I wish I had an Abit board here to try. Then I could help you more. Let us know how things work out.

Hope this helps.

I am thinking that maybe your burner is toast.
Sorry for the pun, but the fact that it was working and now does not leads me to believe that perhaps something is no longer as it once was. I have found that burners have a working life considerable less than regular CD drives. I think it has to do with the extra heat generated during the writing process.

You're not using the Roxio Easy CD Creator software, are you?

Thanks every one. Here is an update.
I have loaded IDE bus mastering drivers for the mother board. I have updated the firmware for the burner. I am using Nero to burn but if I can't see it in the bios , does not make a difference. I have tried 3 different cables. I have tried so many different ways to hook it up to the IDE channels, (both channels) I think I have been doing it in my sleep.I have tried different ways with the jumper settings. What is odd is I can put it in another computer and it works just fine. I have emailed TDK several times and of course have told me to do the things that I have already done. I thinking , since burners are so cheap I will get another one but this is really bugging me. I guess if I resort to using a hammer, I really will not have to worry about it any more. LOL
I have a couple of more things to try before I completely give up.

You might try setting your jumpers to cls
Also you should not have a cd & cdrw on the same controllers
Some bios will prevent the burner from working if they are on the same IDE controller

I fixed the problem, but I have always had my CD burner and CD on the same IDE with no problems until now.
I tried cable select but that was not the problem.
I finally just disconnected all of my drives and hooked the drive up to the power. It reset the chip and now the drive works fine.
