| After my board fried during the 2003 Blackout.
I bought a Soyo SY-7VEM barebone kit. Inside I put a PIII 850MHz and paired it with PC100 memory. One stick I think was bad and when I pulled it the board didn't whine anymore.
Anyway. I connected the IDE/ATAPI devices (HDD and CD-ROM) and the FDD and pressed the on button and the computer wouldn't start.
I checked the power supply and ATX connector to the board. Still no power up. I removed the NIC. Still no power up. Now I remove IDE/ATAPI devices (HDD and CD-ROM) and the FDD and voila! Power up!
I call Soyo tech support. They said the board is fine because it boots so it has to be one of my devices shorting the board and to insert devices one-by-one to find the rouge device.
I then do so. FDD went in first. Powered up fine. HDD went next. Refused to power up. Took out HDD and put in CD-ROM. Powered up.
I now think I have traced the problem to the HDD. So I plug it in a different computer and that computer also failed to power on. Now thinking I've got it, I bought a new HDD which is coming tomorrow to replace the one I think is bad.
Did I miss any steps here?
Is there something else I should have done/tried?

| You didn't get that barebones from Tiger Direct by chance? I got the exact same kit from them and the board was bad. (Figured that out after countless hours doing what you described!)
By not powering up, do you mean wouldn't POST? I assume that you are at least getting power to the CPU fan. It posts with all but the suspect HDD?
You did what I would have done. Good luck with the new HDD.

Yep, it's from TigerDirect. I've bought 5 so far. (No I haven't learned my lesson yet) 3 out of the 5 were bad.
By not powering up, I mean just that. No power. No fans spinning, no green leds, no post, no sounds/beeps, no nothing.
You ever get this kit shipped to you upside-down? I got it 2/5 times shipped that way.

| I've used three so far - the second of which was a replacement for the first.
Did you have fun trying to get through to Soyo's tech support? I called an hour after they "opened", and kept getting the message they weren't open yet. Frustrating! Finally got through to get my case number to return it to TG.
Upside down?! Sometimes I wonder about Tiger Direct....

I have a lot of problems with Soyo tech support. They run their operation out of Cali and I'm in New York City, so I can't call until 12PM my time. 90% of the time you get someone with such a heavy Taiwanese accent you can't understand a word. They're quick to throw the blame at anyone else but them (eg: PNY, Western Digital, Intel, AMD, etc). I wonder if my Soyo tech support horror story is still on EN anywhere for your viewing.
TigerDirect is another story. There shipping is so damn shotty. I get things shipped upside. Wrong items (especially with memory). I order 128MB SDRAM PC100 once and I get 128MB SDRAM PC133. Another time I bought a case. The HDD LED was shipped broke. Now my HDD LED is always lit up.

| And especially don't order a SoYo MoBo from tigerdirect | |

| I don't really know of any other places cheaper then TigerDirect. | |
|
| Dunno, but my time is far too valuable to be wasted repacking incorrect orders and returning them. | |

Same here, so I'm hoping someone has a better company in mind.

Yep and before that the egghead brick and mortar store chain. They keep reinventing themselves. Now they are into mid to high discount. Service seems to be good.

| I've placed 3 orders with tiger direct and have no problems yet. I guess I have been lucky. | |

| Hey now TigerDirect isn't that bad.
I buy from them. I have a barebones which is the same as your except it is the pro version of the same board. I did have some problems in the beggining but I worked out the kinks with a bios upgrade and changing memory. Otherwise I've had good luck with them. I have another system I put together about 2 years ago and its still up and running.
As far as Soyo tech support I did it all via email so I didn't have to work around any heavy accents.

I think the Pro version is for AMD processors.

| I just got a PC exhaust fan for my Linux box from Tiger Direct. Came quick, packaged real nice, no problems. | |
| Tarzanboy 2003-09-10, 3:35 am |
| Have you ever had an exhaust fan come to you in any condition other than working?
Cheers,
