| Which bran firewall do you use and why? | |
| Boulware5 2003-08-11, 3:10 pm |
| Well, I use a SohoWare BroadGuard cable/dsl firewall router. It does NAT and stateful inspection. On my windows machines I sometimes use zonealarm as well. On my Linux machine, I use iptables as well. Nothing fancy - just block everything and let in only what I need (like SSH). That's probably over-doing it, but I'm very security conscious. | |

| Right now I'm using Sygate. So far, so good. | |

| I use Norton and Zonealarm.
I use Zonealarm when I go to Windows update or when I can't access some sites. It allows me to check whether it's my Norton config that is preventing me from accessing a site.
Norton comes with so many features that it's difficult to know your way around immeditely after installing. But with patience and time you could know it well enough to configure it yourself and not use the default. The reason I like it is because
1. Firewall: With Rules I can choose to block all or specific IP addresses and ports to access my PC, using TCP or UDP or both. And as I have a multihomed PC, I can permit or block by adpater. I can decide which applications or their accompanying can access the Internet. I can also block ActiveX, scripts, and java. It has a default or custom settings. The firewall also had Trojan Horse Rules
2. IDS: If a computer tries to access my PC, I can track it and know it's location and the domain name info and everything.
3. Ads Blocker: I can block web site ads and popups.
4. Privacy Control: I can block cookies and information about my browser and visited sites.
5. Spam Alert: I haven't used it as I have an Internet email.
6. Parental Control: I haven't used it yet as I don't have anyone to check on.
Briefly speaking, it has a lot of features which is okay for a security conscious person who knows what he is doing when setting it up. It's easy to handle if you understand how a firewall works. With all the risks on the Internet nowadays it's worth it with that price. The default is okay if you don't understand anything about it because it comes with default rules. And the good thing about it is each time there's security vulnerability with port access like this DCOM on port 135, an update will set the rule. I went in to set it and noticed it's been set, as it has a Liveupdate feature common to all Norton products. It comes with a good Help file and also there's a Knowledgebase Support site for it.

| Anyone use a CISCO router with IOS as a firewall? Been considering that, but not until I study for CCNA. That would be some pretty good protection... | |

| Kerio - as far as local machine software firewalls go I prefer being able to tailor it to my needs.
My hardware one is a LinkSys BEFSR41 DSL/Cable Modem Sharing Firewall - about $145 US - not a bad price.

| I use Zone Alarm for local protection of my pc's, but use Netgear's FM114P Cable/DSL Prosafe firewall for my cable connection. I turn on ZA whenever I take my laptop's out of my network range.
I also have the Cisco soho 71 router/firewall, but haven't figured out how to program it yet. The web interface is OK, but I seem to hbe having problems getting an IP address from my ISP. If I manually plug in a IP then I'm ok.
Paisleyskye: I have used the free download of Sygate as well. I like that software firewall better than any other. (wish I bought that instead of ZA...but may buy it soon for my ZA update subscription expired) |
