Author Need your Help cloning a Hard drive!

This Guy calls me up, he has a SCSI Harddrive from some Nortel System, supposedly a Voicemail system, and he wants me to clone the Drive.
My Machines are all WinXP/2000 or Linux, with XP i am afraid that it puts a Signature on the Drive the second it boots, with the Linux bootdisk, ( using the DD command, i am afraid that it will not see the SCSI-Controller.
Should i use an older Version of Ghost perhaps?
How do i clone that darn thing?
I will meet with him tomorrow, he is getting desperate, willing to spend some $$$ on this one.
I don't even have a clue, what a Nortel System is...
I do know how to clone Drives, with all kinds of different tools, but what about the Filesystem on this one? Will Linux see it? Will Ghost clone this SCSI-Drive successfully?

What are you using to clone?

If you are using Ghost 03 then it shouldn't be a problem. Use the bootdisk option that allows for SCSI drives.

Ghost should certainly work. There's also driveimage and xxcopy

Never used xxcopy but I believe it's free.

Using the dd command in Linux may not be the best choice. If you dd from one drive to another - if I remember right - the destination drive has to be identical (cylinders, etc).

Hmmm... The Nortel system could be either a Meridian or a Norstar and likely the voicemail stored on that drive is called Meridian Mail. IT could be something different, but that is the type of voicemail that is usually installed with a Nortel system. If you could do a sector by sector copy, you might be OK, but I am almost sure you will need to do this to a drive of equal size. I am assuming the person bringing the drive over is thinking it is on the verge of failure. I've seen references that the OS used by the Nortel system is called VxWorks, but don't take my word for it. You may also want to take a look at this site http://www.pbxinfo.com/ to get some answers. Additionally you may need to sign up before you can browse the forums.

Good Luck!

yup - identical is the problem there with dd

Thanks for all the Input, Folks, i feel more confident now about this.
BTW:
DD will copy the Drive, if it is equally in Size or Bigger. If the Drive is bigger, DD will only use the exact Partitionsize of the Smaller Drive. If you lets say copy a 4.3 gig to a 120 gig, the new clone will only have the 4.3 on it and you will not be able to use the rest of the drive, unless you expand it using other tools.

I use DD often when it comes to copy TiVo Drives ( which is entirely Linux based), then expand them using the Hinsdale-Tools.

Thanks again, all of you for the Input!

You could also use our Products: Altiris eXpress Deployment Server or RadpiDeploy.

Deja-vue:

What did you find out about the Nortel and Voicemail system?

I am kind of curious because in addition to my PC and Network duties at where I work, I also get to tinker (not a good word I know) with the phone system here. I've not had any formal training in it, so I have been basically flying by the seat of my pants using cryptic notes left behind by folks that did administer it before and what I can find on sites like PBXInfo.

I've been meaning to play with Altris Express, is there a trial (free) version available, Cyberdude?

Cheers,

That's a tuff problem. I have never worked with Nortel. I believe you are right about Windows trying to take over. It always assumes it's the only OS on the computer. Have you read anything on Nortel and/or the filesystems it uses? I couldn't find too much info seraching around.

All of Altiris's Products ship with either a 7 day or 30 day trial license. You can also request extended ones and ones for large environments.

I actually used my old Linux-bootdisk ( the one i use for my TiVo's) and did the
dd if= /dev/hdc of=/dev/hda bs=1024k

copied the entire thing, the Customer called me back after installing the Drive and it works!!!

Thanks for the update! You just gave me another reason why I need to learn more about Linux. Unfortunately I haven't spent as much time with is OS as I would like too. Good time to change that.

BTW.... the customer didn't happen to mention if the drive contained Meridian Mail did they? I'm curious because I have a Seagate SCSI drive spinning in the Nortel Option 11c I get to take care of and what you have done could prove useful someday.
