Primary Master and Primary Slave

| Hi all
Ive got a problem.
Ive setup two hard drives in my computer one as a master 2GB and the other as a slave 80GB.Both are NTFS and basic Ive tried using Windows XP and Partion Magic disk management.
Both drives are recognised correctly under the bios.
What Im trying to do is load Windows XP on them both and have the option to bothfrom one drive or the other.
However most configurations result in one drive not being being able to start. I can guess it has something to do with trying to boot from both drives.
Windows gives a long message about not being able to start the drive because of possible hardware configuration.
I can install the drive alright as a storage only drive. Your help will be appreciated.

| First off, I don't understand why you would want to have the same OS on two different drives in the same system.
I believe the problem you are having has something to do with the boot.ini, and possibly the MBR as well. (System files like to be on the same partition.)

| I have to agree with Mrfixit. You can only have one driver at the steering wheel controling the car. I really don't understand why you would want to do this. Can you explain in a little more detail, maybe I'm missing what your trying to say.  | |

| Having separate OS's on each drive makes sense (maybe you mean that?), but as was said, having the same on each don't make a lot of practical sense. | |

| Did the setup finish correctly on both drives end as expected?
If not then setup the slave disk first, then when finished disable it in bios and setup on the master disk.
Then enable the slave disk in bios and be sure only the master disk is in boot order.
Log on in recovery console (on master disk) and execute bootcfg.
This will get you 2 of the same OS on separate disks both bootable, why you want this I don’t understand then again it’s not for me to understand.

As to why i want to do this.
Simply to see if it was possible. Idle work for idle hands some may say or just a learning experience.
I will give you suggestions a look. Im also assuming that the same logic applies if I decided to setup Windows XP FAT 32 formatted on one disk and Windows ME on the next disk?

| All this trouble only needed if you want setup XP two times on same computer, but if it was seperat OS no trouble just go ahead with the older one first.

hmmm i find it hard to believe that u can't do it. I can understand having the same operating system on your computer. I used to do the same thing with win98. The reason I did it was because I did a lot of hardware switching and also have a bad habit of dl'ing way too much shareware... some of it good and some not. so i used a spare drive and installed win98 and basically used it to experiment with various programs to determine whether or not i wanted to keep it. If I decided to keep it, then i installed it on my main drive. This way my main 98 install didn't fill up with garbage as fast. I have a BIOS that will boot from practically any drive, so that is how i controlled which 98 booted. I ended up using the drive to put together another system so I'm down to one 98 system, but I orginally installed this one in Jan of 2000 and it still runs fairly well. Before when I ran only one 98 install, I ended up doing a fresh install about once a year or so and i think that installing and uninstalling several programs contributed to that.
I wonder if Microsoft purposefully made XP look for duplicates on a system irregardless of what drive is set to boot. I don't know if Microsoft would require 2 separate licenses on XP in the same system...but I wouldn't be surprized if they did... |
