Almost done with ordering. Down to the graphics card. I have on order the Biostar mobo w/ AMD ATHLON XP 2500+
FSB: 333.
I learned here the rule of thumb for buying memory, is there one for graphics cards as well?
I am looking at this card right now:
VGA PALIT Geforce FX5600 128MB 8X AGP, DVI, TV-Out Retail

thanks for the help!

While I haven't heard of the brand you've mentioned, VGA PALIT, the chipset used seems to be decent. If the card is anything like this one, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Really, the video card choice boils down to what you are going to be doing the majority of the time with the computer. If you are doing CAD work, then an Open GL, or one that supports it anyway, would be a good choice. Gaming? The above ought to do OK. Doing just spreadsheets, word processing, that sort of thing? Then the card you've mentioned would be overkill for the application. Of course it is always nice to have the power in reserve when you need it.

Nice in dead!
but this is my first build and since I haven't the time for serious online gameing, the $500 card is a bit much. I will mark that page for future reference.

Thanks to all!

Right now, the best performing cards on the market are the high end ATIs. ATI has a long history of issues with drivers but if you make it through that, they're pretty sweet.

So are you going with the video card you asked about? I agree, a $500 card is a bit much for the first system you build; especially if the drivers seem to be a bit problematic for that vendor. At least the motherboard you chose, Biostar, has a Nvidia chipset on board. It should get along nicely with the video card you mentioned earlier.

I got the GeForce FX5600 128MB 8X AGP.

I will get a chance on my first order to do an RMA. Took the case out of the box and the back of the side was bent by the top thumbscrew, causing the side not to fit snug to the front panel.
Unless I take a rubber mallet to it, but i didn't pay $48 to have to modify a new case.

i bought an ati 8500dv and it came out of the box with a capacitor that had fallen off.....a lil bit of soldering and i didnt' have to worry about an rma...i hate sending things back for some reason...
although i have sent a few things back....i'm just impatient i guess
