I would like to try to build a computer for the first time at home. I have done it in a school environment, but the motherboard/processor was already installed. Looking for advice on what kind and where to find the parts I will need. Might try setting this up as a server, and maybe for gaming. Hope this is the right forum.

Thx Ahead,

Troy

First you must know what you want.

You can buy any parts from computing superstore like BestBuy, CompUSA, .... or local shop, and online (everywhere),..

If you learn how to build one at the classroom, you will need to do the same thing..

A PC or Svr need:
Case
MB with CPU
Memory
Power supply
FD or CD-ROM
HD
Monitor
keyboard
mouse
and OS (window, Linux, ....)

I think I should set up a workstation first and then the server, but what i was hopeing in posting here is advice on the best sites to look at. I wouldn't want to go and buy the first thing motherboard i see just to find out i could have gotten one somewhere else for less dough.

what are you looking to spend? is it going to be your primary computer or a secondary to just muck around with?

i'd go with an AMD processor...you can get athlon xps, 1700+ for about $45 and up. durons are less than $50 if you want to play with those too. i personally like the abit mobos and ati video cards. you might like a video card with an nvidia chipset...it's all preference. get a mobo with an nforce2 chipset if you want built in video. memory...check out crucial...jamie put the link up for that site. as far as cases....go for the prettiest case
hard drives...i've always personally bought maxtor and western digital...i've just had good luck with both. you can pick up floppy drives and cd drives for very little money....gut another pc you have or someone elses! or just go to your local pc store and they might have some older parts around and they'll have the cables you need. you can usually get cables in bulk and save some money. i'll stop babbling now...hope i helped at least a little....have fun!

If you have computer fairs in your area, its a great place to get stuff cheap and to learn by watching techs build PCs for customers.

Deffinately pricewatch.com Save yourself some shipping costs by buying all your parts from the same place. Most cases come with power supplies. You can also pick up a Barebones system which usually consists of a Case, power supply, Mobo & processor.

If you want fancy, such as LED fans, liquid cooling and stuff you can get it at PCMODS.com

You can see a case mod that I built HERE

So are you active duty now or is your tour done?

My son just left for Okinawa for a year and will be at Camp Kinser, so seeing your flag waving made me think of him.
