| Hi,
I passed CSPFA 642-521 today with scoring 909. The passing score is 825. It was 70 questions. Questions from MC, AUS, FWSM, only one simulation & that too just to activate & interface on PIX & assign a name & IP address.
I referred many documents from Cisco web site. The good one was User Guide for PIX 6.3 & User Guide for Ciscoworks Maintenance Center 1.0 & Auto update server 1.0. It helped me a lot in order to find many un-answered questions.
Also User guide for FWSM is a good help for information on FWSM.
This was my first exam in CCSP track. I’m looking ahead for others, soon.
My personal experience is to use Cisco user guide for detailed knowledge.
I have PIX 506E & 515E in my office network.
I also referred Cisco press & Syngress Books.
Also Referred Test king & Boson Test #1 in last 48 hrs.
Do not get in to too much of detailed configuration. Basics must be clear before you go to attempt the exam. This exam covers too many topics but not in detailed configuration. It’s good for you to practice all possible scenarios in your lab. Don’t need to remember complicated commands.
If anyone wanna have my notes, most welcome. Give me your email ID.

| Hi People,
I don't understand one thing, I see many people asking for my notes here & the number of post for them is only 1. Did you guys signed this forum just to get my notes ?
Man, remember one thing, nothing is free in this world. I'm distributing my notes free because I got many help from people.
If you guys want someone to help you, be ready to help others also.
I hope everyone who signed this forum & wrote his first post to me will understand the concept of help & will promise to help others all the time.
Amjad, check ur mails. | |
| obiemeta 2003-09-04, 5:48 am |
| Dear Nareshg,
I think i fully appreciate your well meaning concerns, and im sure others on this forum also do.
I am of the opinion though, that since most people who sign on to this forum recently, will be just starting of( or there about) in their preparations, its only natural for them to desire materials and info from those who are (more or less) more familiar in the field.
That not withstanding i am sure that as we all study along and gain knowledge, everyone will come in handy at one point or another ,in rendering help for the benfit of all, as no one person can know everything. In this way we can all work together to archieve our "common" goals ....CCSP certification.
Obi | |
| nareshg 2003-09-04, 5:57 am |
| I welcome all those people who signed newly this site.
My concern writing to them is only that people should not sign only to get help; they should also be ready for giving help.
I saw many people whose signing month & year is very old but no. of posts are very less.
This is the place where we share our experiences to help others.
Do not think that your opinions are worth less, they might be very valuable for others.
Guys don't take my words otherwise. It's just a suggestion.
Enjoy..... | |
| netkamoze 2003-09-04, 6:39 am |
| well done! I've been in this forum for close to 2years and you're the first person i've seen who's willing to really share his knowledge. there are really people out there who can't afford to purchase the required/recommended books and practise questions and they still have the will to put down a month's salary for an exam!! These are the people who make do with manuals and materials from free sites and study by candlelight..They do the exams because its the only way out of the poverty..
thanks again and please can i have your notes.- netkamoze@hotmail.com

| I recently went to New Horizons(training institute) and took the course for PIX. Initially I was intimidated but found the courseware to be much easier and straightforward than the CCNA. Was the test very difficult at all? Most of what I remember from the course was setting up different conduit statements(much like the ACL's from CCNA), NATTing, some key exchange, and logging info. | |
| nareshg 2003-09-05, 3:14 am |
| Hi Jeff,
I don't know how much & how your instructor covered the course. But this is for sure it's not so easy as CCNA.
If you took the classes for the new version then make sure that they covered all chapters in the course.
I didn't go for course. I used self study material. And if you look at the questions in exams many of them are not covered in any of the course book. Look at my feedback at hte begning of this post & then comapre with the material you got in ur couse.
| jeff50ho 2003-09-05, 9:48 am |
| Well, I have been using and administering a PIX firewall for a little over two years so maybe that's why it's easier for me. Would you mind sending me your notes, just to be on the safe side?

| Hello Naresh,
Can you please send the exam notes to my address (p_kailash@yahoo.com) also I have some doubts about the exam can you please clarify.....
Is it based on PIX version 6.2 or 6.3, I just want to
know if the exam would be covering all new features of
6.3 (Coz there are so many things in the 6.3 which are
not there in the exam topics at CISCO site)
Does it covers the VoIP as well.
Do they ask the commands as well like they use to ask in CCNA..
Have you used any test exams like boson etc .. do u suggest to purchase the Boson for this....
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Ragards,
Kailash | |
| nareshg 2003-09-15, 3:27 am |
| Hi Kailash,
The New CSPFA exam is not based on any version specifically. At least I didn't get any question which was specifically version dependent. Questions are from PIX basics. But it's better to go through the PIX 6.3 user guide once. It's available on Cisco site. It clears many topics also. You should no the difference in both version. No need to go for each & every command level difference.
Yes VOIP, AUS, FWSM, MC are covered in the exam.
You will be asked to type commands in the blank field like CCNA also & simulations also.
BOSON tests are good but I'll suggest you to use it to test your study level not to study the subject through it.
All the best for the exam.
If you buying the BOSON test buy it at least 10 days before your exam so that you will be covered for the money back guaranty.

| Hi nareshg..
I am just fail 9E0-111 today~~and got 800...I am just study syngress self study book. I haven't on hands experience in PIX firewall...And I am afraid i have not enough time to prepare to old exam so i want to take the new exam 642-521 at Oct, do U know what is the different between 9E0-111 and 642-521??also would U mind send your study notes to me please, my email is wingkui@hotmail.com
Thank you for your kindly help
| |
| nareshg 2003-09-16, 8:00 am |
| Hi wingkui,
There is not big difference in both exams. Basics are same but there are few more things added in to 642-521 like AUS, MC, FWSM etc. You can check my old posts in this forum for details.
Syngress is again a good book for 642-521 also. If you scored 800 means you study well. What else you need is some hands on PIX. You can look for some online labs also or you can buy a used PIX 501 with version 6.3 for your practice.
You must read some additional documents before going for new exam. The best is the Cisco PIX 6.3 User Guide. It gives you a very good support for understanding the configuration part.
Just check my initial post of this chain, you’ll get more details.
Don't worry, Be happy.
Try Again.... you can get it.

| Im pist because I took this exam for granted. It wasn't overly difficult but I only brushed over AAA (AAA w/ACL and AAA Group Objects) and that was my downfall. The questions were detailed and I had to guess a lot. I studied only the Cisco Press book, which covered a lot but not everything. I avoided taking the 640-521 because I studied IOS 6.2 and not 6.3. Plus I was light on MC and AUS but they were asked anyway.
Study! This test is not hard but you must know your sh**. I will take the 640-521 @ a later date after I read the syngress book and/or sybex book.
Good Luck. | |

| Hi Folks,
From the postings here, 9E0-111 seems to be
very close, if not identical, to 640-521.
Guys mentioned that 9E0-111 also involves
questions in AUS, MC and FWSM. Then, what're
the real differences between 9E0-111 and
640-521 ?
Thanks for any idea ! | |

| Dear Naresh,
Many are writing that there are lots of questions from Multicast and SDM. After going through the topics I am wondering what type of question are asked in test. SDM user guide (PDF) from Cisco has more than three hundred pages.
I am really baffled by Multicast topics also. Is multicast configurations are asked OR commands OR any? …
Any suggestions.
Naresh you are doing good and helping. That’s a good thing. I am happy to be part of this. Wish you good luck in CCSP and CCNP.

Rajendra B Pal | |
| nareshg 2003-10-02, 10:59 am |
| Hi Rajendra,
It's true that this exam covers Multicast configuration, AUS, MC & FWSM configuration. Basically it covers everything where PIX can be involved.
For multicast the questions are on basic knowladge & basic configuration. You need to understand how multicast works with PIX & how do you configure PIX when Multicast server is in Outside network & when it's in inside network.
This exam covers detailed configuration study for PIX itself & basics for all extras like FWSM, AUS.
I did not understand your SDM means. R U talking about FWSM or something else ?
| rbpal 2003-10-02, 11:09 am |

Thank you very much for prompt reply.
SDM - I am referring to Security Device Manager.
Thanks for inputs in Multicast

| I haven't been a member of this board for very long, but I've got to chime in here. All you people asking this guy for notes need to get out there and find them for yourself. It looks more like you want a braindump from him than just his notes. You need to learn this stuff and be able to actually work on the equipment and not just pass an exam. Employers nowadays aren't looking for "paper tigers"...they want someone who knows their sh** and has the experience to back up their resume. If you can't go out on the web and put together your own notes, I wonder how well you will really be able to perform as a network or system administrator. Stop being a bunch of vultures...
By the way, I just passed SECUR exam 642-501. I used the Sybex study guide, Cisco CCIE Practical Security Studies book, Boson test #1 and Test King. Also found some info on Router MC (Management Center for VPN Routers) on the Cisco website. Here's the Router MC link....

That's all you're gettin' from me, suck it up and do some research!
| meijin 2003-10-09, 5:44 pm |
| If you had stuck around a little longer before opening your mouth, you might have noticed that folks here will often exchange their own personal study notes in an effort to help out the next guy. Nothing wrong with that and nothing to do with not being able to do your own research. Asking someone about their own study notes is no where near a "braindump". To qualify as a dump, the writer would have to know the testing material up front and then write the guide or notes....not the other way around as in this case.
I also find it interesting that you mention testking in your list of materials after accusing others of wanting braindumps. Again, if you had held your tongue long enough to see...you might have found that lots of folks around here would consider YOUR material a braindump and that this is how you passed your test.
Thanks for being such a helpful and informed individual.
| forbesl 2003-10-10, 5:12 am |
| Exchanging notes between professionals is one thing; however, this post looked like a bunch of kids who didn't do their homework and wanted to get a copy from the person who did....or a playground full of grade schoolers scrambling to get candy from some poor soul who brought a bag of it to school (me too!! me too!!)
The individual who started this post was even fed up with it.
And yes, I mentioned testking in my last post. I'll tell you one thing though, I won't use them again! Many of the answers to the questions I knew to be flat-out wrong from experience. If I had relied on them to pass the test, I would have been screwed.
Pardon me for opening my mouth to a "senior member" such as yourself, whose VAST experience must surely eclipse mine as a "junior member". Seeing as how you have a huge list of certifications, you MUST know what you're talking about. I humbly bow before you and quake from fear at your feet, o wise disseminator of wisdom...
| meijin 2003-10-10, 5:16 am |
| Now that you know your place...
Look...some people are leeches...some are not. If you just come running in through the door shooting off you mouth it is a bit annoying. I'm a nobody...but I know a few of the people here that asked for the notes and they are not after just the paper. They are simply looking for anything that will help them learn...they same motivations I am sure you had in buying a TK product.
Fair enough? | |
| forbesl 2003-10-10, 6:00 am |
| Fair enough. Guess I shouldn't have made a blanket statement about "all" who requested notes. Some on this post, I'm sure, are professional individuals sharing information.
Fair warning, though; this will probably not be the last post you see me "shooting off at the mouth". I'm a middle-aged man pushing 45 who just calls it like he sees it, and that won't change.
| forbesl 2003-10-10, 7:45 am |
| BTW meijin,
I'm thinking about upgrading my home network to wireless. I'm moving my access computer to another room and am tired of dropping Cat 5 down the walls and crawling through my attic. Any suggestions for an excellent wireless access point?
Yeah, I know, I put you down, then ask for suggestions....but wireless is not my "forte" at the moment. So I figure what the hell, he can suggest or tell me to screw myself. I won't lose sleep either way.
| meijin 2003-10-10, 12:54 pm |
| Nah...no worries.
They are expensive, but you just cannot beat Cisco. If you watch eBay for a 340 access point as opposed to a 350 access point (only real major difference is no PoE on the 340), you can get them for a good price. I just picked up another one the other day.
For down an dirty I like Linksys. Their home broadband wireless router is good and has an add-on module for about $100 or so that will give you a power increase if needed. Plus, I have had very good luck with the tech people when they were needed.
I really don't like NetGear and their support sucks.
I also have an Avaya that I like.
Best bet is the Cisco if you can get a good price on one. Best bang for the buck and the most features.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm glad to hear that my notes helped you.
I scheduled to attempt the CSVPN at last, so I don't have any notes.
I would be glad to hear from some one if some one who passed csvpn can share his/her notes here.

| I'd love a copy of the notes. thedarkelf69@yahoo.com would work just fine.
I'm planning on taking the Pix Exam soon and then probably the IOS exam. Once I pass I'll scan and include my notes if anyone is interested.

| To all you idiots out there who may think Naresh's notes are braindumps/cheat-sheets or a quick down-and-dirty of the CSPFA test:
His notes are NOT any of those. His notes are a personal compilation of fundamental PIX firewall study material, NOT braindumps/cheat-sheets.
Since that is now known, I'm sure at least half of you will quit bothering him for those notes.
| Darkelf 2004-09-14, 1:26 pm |
| I didn't really think it was a cheat sheet, but different folks take notes different ways and emphasize different material. Another point of view is always good. | |

| Hi everyone,
I'm planning to give the CSPFA Exam, in few weeks. I'm studying with the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) Second Edition, CCSP Self-Study. Is it ok with this book, or I have to find further materials for passing? Please is anyone could give me any directions for better results? Any notes regarding this exam will be welcomed. If you have any useful notes, please mail to me to this address: aqirjazi@infosoftgroup.com.al
All the best to everyone.
