Hello, I'm very confused. I took the 642-501 test today and although I (THOUGHT I)knew the commands and syntax for the simulation questions, it wouldn't accept any of them. It just kept returning the same message: "^" invalid marker.

I tried to enter:

r> config t
tacacs-server host <ip-address> key <key>
etc...

but I kept getting the error message. What did I miss. NEW AT THIS...THANKS FOR YOU RESPONSE.

You need to start with R(config)#aaa new-model

Hello, yes I did start with aaa new-model. Sorry I didn't explain that; I'm just rather spaced out and frustrated over this.

When I reviewed cisco's tutorial on the web for the test, the simulation had a drop down menu.????

wonder if there's a bug in their testing engine or something. just done my SECUR last week and i issued the exact same command and it works for me though.

Anyway may be you should file a complain or something to Prometric/Cisco.

I did call the Prometric Customer Care line and opened an incident. But while I was waiting for them, I contacted an engineer at the local Cisco office and we talked. IT WAS ME.
Prometric did contact me and tell me they reviewed the test and couldn't find any problems.
Scheduled to take the test again tomorrow AM. I won't tell you what I did, 'cause you all will laugh. $125 wasted on my own mistake!!! Stuff happens...

OH, Bloody Hll! I'll tell you but it's SOOOO embarrasing. I was so intent on the syntax of the commands and the misleading error message, I didn't realize I didn't type "enable" at the router prompt.

Ok, so there I told you. I hope you get a good laugh out of it!!!!!

Taking it for the LAST time in a few hours,

I am NOT a leech and I do not NEED his anwer or your answer 'cos I passed 642-501 a month ago with 944/1000. It is just about the easiest Cisco exam I have ever taken. It certainly does not come anywhere as dificult as the VPN, CSPFA, or CSIDS exams, all of which I have taken and passed. I am not even going to compare it to the CCNP exams that I passed almost 3 years ago.

There should be no sense of embarrassment in airing a mistake made during an exam in this forum. Just like I said prior, we are here to share and learn.

Crap happens in test environments that would not happen in the "real world". No need to feel silly about it, we've all been there one day or another. Sorry to hear that you have to repay to take the test again because of that, but as you said, you live and learn. Great attitude to have!

With reference to this particular instance concerning his mistake, this is a common mistake made all the time in the "real world". There is nothing to "learn" or "share". He was quite forthcoming in his reply, albeit I'm sure his kicked himself in the a$$ when he realized what he'd done.

Guess what, though? He shouldn't have even posted that simulation question in an open forum to begin with since it was on the exam. Violation of the NDA is what that is.

With reference to general "sharing" and "learning", I've noticed many people in these forums want the real questions/answers and make ignorant people feel guilty for not "sharing" them in the interest of "learning". While you may not have needed the answers, your reply to him was framed such that it looked like you wanted him to let everyone know how to solve the simulation question. Instead of letting him know about the NDA violation, you appeared to be encouraging him.

REAL sharing and learning should not be done at the expense of violating the NDA we all agree to before taking the exams.

To bad the moderator for this forum is no longer functioning as such. Oh, wait....there IS no moderator!!

Gentlemen,

I'm sorry to have caused such controversy. In my current situation I don't have coworkers or colleagues to discuss these topics with. Let me assure you, I have worked and studied at great length to pass any certification I have achieved.

I retook the 642-501 yesterday and pased with an 899.

And on final note. I am not a him; I am a her. So Gentlemen, I wish you all the best but I probably won't partake in this forum again. Regards, DB

PS...I can take the heat, I just choose not to.

I apologize for referring to you with the incorrect gender. Congratulations on your pass.

It's not the reference, it's the assumption.

Thank you for the congrats.

It's a natural assumption if you consider the fact that most members here are male and that I.T. isn't exactly overrun with females. No offense was intended by anyone here, I assure you. Maybe you should think about adding your gender to your profile.

I just took the test today and the sim kept telling me that the version was not correct. I know the command, but it would not take aaa authentication... even after aaa new-model. Any ideas?

2004-07-21, 8:09 pm

were you in the right mode?
SteveSteve

2004-07-22, 10:27 am

Yes, I was in the correct mode. There was a popup box indicating that I was using an incorrect version of the IOS. When I would type AAA ? I would see authentication as an option, but would not allow me to type it in.
Also I received about 10-12 questions on SDM which was not on Cisco’s site about being on the test.

To anyone who has taken the SECUR exam,

I took the exam unsucessfully today. On the sim about configuring ISAKMP. I understood the test wanted you to configure the ISAKMP Policy on a RTR. Was I suppose to configure both RTR's? Setup isakmp identity?
