Going for the CSPFA exam shortly. Does anyone know if there are any references to conduits, outbound, and apply? I've been studying materials for both v6.3 and some earlier stuff. Also, I have the same question about OSPF. v6.3 now supports both OSPF and access-list/access-group (the preferred method of access control). access-lists were available earlier for inbound, but now they're apparently used outbound as well as a replacement for outbound/apply. I'd like to know which version of code they'll be using as a reference.

The Syngress book is the most recommended one as you can see on this forum also.

You can download the ebook from

That doesn't help really. The cisco.com/certification page (click on ccsp) doesn't show what version to study, so I've been studying both the pre-v6.3 and 6.3 version command sets. 6.3 has many new features and many new recommended ways of doing the same things. Guess I'll stick to studying both. ;-)

passed CSPFA 9E0-111 on Friday. Actually 9E0-111 is based on PIX IOS 6.2. So, all questions are based upon that version. You don't need to get worried since there is no question which can arise your confusion about the version.

I'm going to take 642-521, and I hope that they haven't introduced any version-specific questions...there are TONS of new things in version 6.3

Good Luck.

I took the 642-521 and FAILED on monday. I was distracted and have gotten a test credit for a new location to retry it. I probably still would have passed had it not been for the questions I didn't expect and were not covered in Cisco's exam book such as.

Multicasting
Firewall Switch Module

I sware I got atleast 10 of those questions if not more on my test.

1 simulation was on the test about "nameif and enabling for 100FULL" which I was prepared for, but I hate the simulator, it takes it 10 years to repond to your commands.

Let me know your experience as I have to go retake it, and please point out anyting you did not expect on the test. I am going to put some time into studying this time around. Also if there are any books out there besides the Cisco one, please let me know that will help.

Will do. Thanks for the heads up on SMR and FSM...I hadn't been paying much attention to them. I'm sure this test is going to be rough. There's so much material to cover that it's mind boggling. I'm using the Cisco 6.3 configuratoin guide, Syngress PIX book, 506E unit (6.3 f/w), LearnKey CBT, and Boson practice tests. Taking forever to get through it all. I'll post what things I come across on the exam that seem out of the ordinary or subjects that are heavily covered.

I have a question on this CSPFA test, does anyone know if this is true. Can u set the pix as a dhcp server & client @ the same time. As in get it to act as both?

Can anyone shed some lite on this.

dhcpd wins 209.165.201.5
dhcpd lease 3000

I beleive it is 825 if I remember right. I took mine through prometric.

I did have that DHCP question on my test also that you asked earler about being both a client and a server.

thx for the reply, booboorich. This leads me to another question, i have taken some sims to see where i sit on taking this test, using a pix 515 for labs & going thru the cisco press book, also got some links off of ciscos site for FWSM, i havent found anything for MC or AUS with a decent amount of substance to read up on. Can anyone post any cisco links for MC or AUS please.

Also can anyone shed light on PAM, from what i see its port application mapping, anyone know if this is on the test?
