dear members
i guess a very basic question in this forum.
what is the difference between
IP PLUS and IP SEC with relation to cisco ios.
i have seen ip plus 56 and also ip plus ipsec 56, is it firewall only for the first and firewall+vpn support for the latter.

IPSec stands for Internet Protocol Security and is an open standard for encrypting and authenticating data at Layer3 of the OSI model. It's made up of ESP and AH protocols, can use tunnel and transport modes, and is always point-to-point for a single connection. IPSec can use DES, 3DES, or AES depending on vendor and can use manual or dynamic key exchanges for security associations.

IP Plus is a certain set of features in Cisco's IOS release for a particular piece of gear just like the F150 is a series of truck for Ford. The F150 might come with mirrors and a tail gate. The F250 might come with big tires and a big horn. The F350 might have dualies and a bumper guard. The IP Plus might have NAT, CBAC, and ITS. IP Plus IPSec 56 has additional IPSec features above and beyond IP Plus but only supports 56-bit DES encryption in IKE and IPSec in that release.

Are you the Devonator that wrote a CCDA study guide ?

Yes, that's me. That was my first book ever, and the editors of Sybex pushed me 24/7 to get it done in a hurry. That's definitely not my favorite ccomplishment. ;-)

Heh, I guess some people blame you for failing. I had no complaints about your book.
