Hi all,
I just got hired in a company, and i found that their network is pretty bad. hubs everywhere from the main router all the way to every single station!!!!, windows 2000 with exchange 5.5 in AMD Duran 1.2

I want to fix their network piece by peice, and I want to replace the machine that holds windows 2000 with exchange 5.5 to windows 2003 with exchange 2003.
My question is, what is the best practice to do that? without bringing mail server down.

Thanks

My assumption would to be to bring up the new 2003 server and promote it as a DC. I would next transfer the 5 FSMO roles over to the new server. Once that is up and running then migrate the exchange over to the new server. You can look on the exchange 2003 cd and there is documentation there on the migration process. I hope they have the AD connector in the environment to synch those accounts.

You will not need ADMT except for domain migrations. Simply what he will end up doing is just migrating the mailboxes to new accounts. Exchange has its own set of tools for this purpose.

Thanks guys for your replys, but now i have a problem,
here is my seario

I have exchange 5.5 on win2k macine, i was trying to install exchange 2003 on a new machine (windows 2003 server) but it didn't let me becuase the Active Directory connectors are not upgraded on exchange 5.5, so i went and upgraded them from the exchange 2003 CD. then i went back to install it on windows 2003, it installed fine.
I moved my mailbox from exchange 5.5 to exchange 2003, i went fine, the problem is now that i CAN"T send e-mail to the outside world. eventhough i CAN get e-mail from the outside world!!! and from the people that are still in exchange 5.5. (They can send and recieve e-mail from inside and outside)

It gives me this error message
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator.
<mail.mydomain.COM #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for "my outside e-mail">

PS: The exchange 5.5 as 2 NIC cards, one for the outside world (Public address) and one in our LAN (Private Address). Exchange 2003 has one NIC that is connected to the LAN (Private Network).

Help Pleaseeeeeeeeee

just a note that i put one of the NICs in the exchange 2003 to go outside.. so now it has a NIC that is connected to our LAN, and a NIC that is connected to the WAN. and still doesn't send e-mail!!!!

Do you have a pix firewall in your environment?

Thanks for replying...
I Have an ISA server, but i'm connected to both LAN and WAN..
I'm thinking that to

1) go to every machine (almost 15) and do an export to their mails, contacts, calendars..etc to thier desktops, so they are backed up.

2) Unplug exchange 5.5 from the network.

3) Install windows 2003, and name it as the exchange 5.5 then join the domain and plug the other NIC in windows 2003 to the WAN.

4) Install exchange 2003 as a member of the domain on server above so that i'm not going to deal with exchange 5.5.

5) Create mailboxes for them from the Active directory connecter.

6) Go back to every machine and import back their mails, contacts....etc.

What do you think, is that going to work???
