More MCSE on Windows 2003 Core Betas on the Way
Microsoft plans to test two more exams for the MCSE on Windows 2003 track later this month.

by Michael Domingo

6/5/2003 — Microsoft plans to test two more exams, 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure and 70-294: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure, later this month, according to the exam objectives guides for these exams posted on Microsoft's MCP Web site.
Exam 70-293, which will be numbered 71-293 during the test period and exam 70-294 (71-294) will both be available from June 19 to June 29. VUE and Prometric testing centers will open up registration for these exams on June 18.

Passing both 70-293 and 70-294 exams satisfies two of the four required for the Core: Network Systems portion of the MCSE on Windows Server 2003.

Beta exams are free but are only offered to qualified subscribers of Microsoft's MCP Newsflash; to find out how to become a beta tester, go to http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/...tatus/beta.asp.

On a related note, another exam for MCSE on Windows 2003, 70-297: Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure, is slated for beta testing in August. Exam 70-298: Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network, is still under development; Microsoft has no objective guide for this exam posted on its Web site as of this report.

I believe the invites were already sent for 70-293 and 70-294 and the beta slots were already taken.

70-297 (Infra Design)and 70-298 (Security Design) are due for beta in August if memory serves correctly.

70-292 (MCSA Upgrade) and 70-296 (MCSE Upgrade) are question marks whether they will be beta tested publicly, as the question pool might mirror the exams that it covers, ie: 292 might be drawn from 290 & 291 and 296 might be drawn from 290, 291, 293 & 294.

It's not a free certificate, it's an opportunity to learn.

There's hundreds of thousands of MCPs. If they sent the invitations to all of them, who would be left to take the tests for a fee?

Like I said before, I've had two invitations in a years times since getting my MCSE. I was an MCP for the whole year prior to that and was recieving the MCP news flash. I did not get any invitations in that time period.

It's like getting a loan, they don't give loans to people who need money. And to be honest, as hard as I am working on prepping for these two betas, it's not quite as free as it sounds.

Be patient, put in the effort, cover the bases, your time will come.

Same here. I've been an MCSE for 3 years, NT4 first, and this was the first time I was asked to participate. I did not recieve and invite for the second two. I can say this, there's new stuff and some of the same old stuff covered.

Good luck Jeff.

I'm feeling a lot more prepared today. I sat down last week and mapped out the amount of modules in the courses 2274-2277. With the time I had available, I had to cover 7 modules a day to be ready. Fell behind going into the weekend, but fortunately, 2276 and 2277 cover networking and there are very few 'new' features as far as network services goes. I actually got ahead by one day, coming out of the weekend.

Today I am doing high level note taking from the book I have been reading on 2003 ("Delta Guide") and will spend the rest of the time looking at dialogue boxes and interfaces etc.

I have installed 2003 many times now, both at home and as a 'virtual pc' here at work, using Connectix Virtual PC.
I have also had Exchange 2003 installed 3-4 times as well including internet connectivity, using dynamic DNS service.

I used to get offered beta exams on a regular basis, but I didn't work with the technologies and I knew I wouldn't stand any chance of passing.

Without my Transcenders I'm sunk.
