According my Exam Cram2 book;

the 'I love you' virus is a variant of the 'melissa' virus

Now, isnt the 'melissa' virus a macro virus and the 'i love you' virus a VBscript virus?

How can they possibly be variants ?!?!
I have a fairly colourful, non-professionl, background in computer security and i am pretty sure these viruses are not similar to each other,i spotted this (potential) error after 5mins of flicking through my book ...

I know this isnt crucial to the Security+ exam but i'm starting to doubt the quality of my Exam Cram2 book, which has always served me well for other M$ exams, and possibly the worth of this certification, if this is what it teaches......

Does anyone who is into security (blackhat or whitehat) know the answer ?

What is ILoveYou.vbs?

LoveLetter is a Win32-based e-mail worm. It overwrites certain files on your hard drive(s) and sends itself out to everyone in your Microsoft Outlook address book.

What is W97 M.Melissa.A?

Melissa is a Microsoft Word macro virus. A macro is a tiny program. Typically they are used to reduce the amount of manual clicking and typing one has to do by automating tasks that are performed often. Through macros, the virus alters the Microsoft Outlook email program so that the virus gets sent to the first 50 people in your address book. It does not corrupt any data on your hard drive or make your computer crash. It just changes some Word settings and sends itself to the people you do not want to infect.

As posted ...

LoveLetter is a Win32-based e-mail worm.
Melissa is a Microsoft Word macro virus.

So, how can they be variants?

Unless of course one considers all virus like activity as one family, so therefore they could be considered such. Myself I no way would consider them variants.

I believe the only thing in common of the two are that they are both Hybrids.

Two Thumbs down to ExamCram2.. A book I also own and currently using for this exam.
