Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP using registry

| Hi all
I want to "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in my XP machine using registry.
I dont like to do it using Properties windows of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
According to Microsoft article in below link:

I changed the NetbiosOptions key in below address in registry to 2.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Cur
rentControlSet\Services\NetBT\
Parameters\Interfaces\Tcpip_{7
66569C7-528F-446E-9CF7-073D6F3A2E0E}]
"NetbiosOptions"=dword:00000002
but it dose not work.
Can you help me please!

before you do that, make sure that no app needs NBT... did you run a packet sniffer to make sure? | |

| well for one thing, that link is for a server2003 box, SO it might not work for XP and if it isnt working I am not surprised.
2nd, it says it that it changes the registry when you do it through the network properties anyway, so why dont you try it that way and see if it works. Does it keep resetting the value when you reboot?
3rd, you can always block it with your firewall, probably even the firewall with SP2 if all else fails (aka you wont spring for a norton or mccafee firewall), so no one from the outside will see it.
lastly, Freak has a good point, make sure you dont need it. If you are on any type of LAN, the DC or servers on the LAN are probably using the machine's netbios name to communicate with it. | |
