Does anyone have any good references on VPN use at Layer 2 only, Layer 3 only and a combined Layer 2 & 3?

Thanks in advanced for any help!

I am a bit puzzled by the question.

IPSec and GRE are layer 3 protocols
L2TP, L2F and PPTP are layer 2 protocols

Beyond that, I am not sure what you are asking for, RFCs, manuals, etc?

TB:

Sorry...poorly worded question...I knew what I ment, just did not say it very well (surprised, actually, that you could not read my mind! ).

OK...the WLAN security book I am reading says that VPN solutions for WLANs should use both Layer2 and Layer3 solutions instead of just one or the other. I am trying to reconcile that in my mind. Sometimes I can be a bit slow on the uptake. So, I am looking for something that explains why you would go just Layer2, just Layer3 or both. Sort of compare and contrast if you will.

Does that make it more clear or did I just muddy the waters?

Thanks for the help!

I have heard of MPLS occasionally being used in Layer 2 or Layer 3 which would be found on backbones. White paper: http://www.riverstonenet.com/technology/mpls_vpn.shtml

L2F and L2TP (layer 2) can be used without IPSec although it would have less than desireable results.

www.ietf. org+VPN+layer+2+and+layer+3]IE
TF has boatloads of info on Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs
